53% of Americans Support Impeachment if ...

    53% of Americans Support Impeachment
For Immediate Release: November 4, 2005

    New Poll Shows Majority of Americans Support Impeachment;
ImpeachPAC is Launched to Support Pro-Impeachment Candidates

By a margin of 53% to 42%, Americans want Congress to impeach President Bush if he lied about the war in Iraq, according to a new poll commissioned by AfterDowningStreet.org, a grassroots coalition that supports a Congressional investigation of President Bush's decision to invade Iraq in 2003.

The poll was conducted by Zogby International, the highly-regarded non-partisan polling company. The poll interviewed 1,200 U.S. adults from October 29 through November 2.

The poll found that 53% agreed with the statement:

"If President Bush did not tell the truth about his reasons for going to war with Iraq, Congress should consider holding him accountable through impeachment."

42% disagreed, and 5% said they didn't know or declined to answer. The poll has a +/- 2.9% margin of error.

"These results are stunning," said AfterDowningStreet.org co-founder Bob Fertik. "A clear majority of Americans now supports President Bush's impeachment if he lied about the war. This should send shock waves through the White House - and a wake-up call to Democrats and Republicans in Congress, who have sole power under the Constitution to impeach President Bush."

That's actually a really low percentage, given the outrageous hypothetical question that is posed.

I do not support Bush, but I do not believe he should be impeached either. That actually 53% support impeachment is actually a very high number.

That's not what the question asked. Pay attention.

It is higher than the percentage that voted for Bush

it is much higher than the response to the same question regarding Clinton posed in 1998 (only 26% supported actual impeachment and removal then)

No Worries, that is incredibly irresponsible of you to use that thread title.

This just goes to show how many liberals selectively read only what they want to, as opposed to the full story and context.

A couple of years ago the answer would have been 95% no to impeachment.

I think most of the people supporting impeachment would believe he lied to the congress to start the war (the facts are hard to prove). However, I still do not believe he should be impeached, a sitting president have to intentionally want to damage the country for him to be impeached in my mind. I am sure Bush did not want to harm the country when he started the war, that the war turned out differently than he expected is another story.

    Good!

And then when we're done impeaching him. He can stand trial for war crimes and crimes against humanity.

The reason the pro-impeachment number isn't higher is because we would actually have to elevate Dick Cheney to the office that he nominally holds, i.e., the President of the United States.

Three years of Cheney at the helm? Granted, it would help the Democrats re-claim the office, but God knows how many Wars For Halliburton we'd get into.

Starting a pre-emptive war which turned out to be unjustified is an international war crime and does rise to the level of 'high crimes and misdemeanors'. If Bush was a Democrat, ...

Because politicans always are manipulating others in order to accomplish their goal. If the war turned out very well and Iraq is exporting tons of crude to the US without costing the US many lives and billions of dollars, do you think anyone in the country would care? I believe he started the war because he thought it was a good idea to secure more oil supply, which is in the interest of the United States.

So you are saying that Bush told the truth on his reasons for going to war?

Nice thread title. Really demonstrates the greatness of this forum.

IF he did x, then Congress should CONSIDER impeachment. That is one hell of a statement there.

Impeachment, the nice way to say coup. Do you blame liberals for going after Bush after the ridculous impeachment attempt on Clinton? What is good for the goose, is good for the gander.

I vote no confidence for our government. Let's hold a special election.

Yes thats exactly what I am saying. He had the same intelligence data that EVERY other country had and they ALL came to the same conclusions (except for Germany, Russia and France who were all on the take from Irag).

We know he had the weapons, he used freakin' gas on the kerds right after the gulf war because they were supporting our troops. If you give someone 16 months notice that you are coming I'm pretty certain you can hide what it is they are coming for.

You people need to quit watching the biased media sources who spin (not report) the news to suite their own agenda. Or at a minimum get comparative information and read it with an open mind.
