In all honesty, I probably will get bashed for this, but they don't compare to any pre 98 49ers team, which were by most regards thoroughly complete on both sides of the ball.

This version of the 49ers are getting there, especially going with Kaepernick over Smith.

cmon man. the pre 98 niners only had hall of fame qb's, a hall of fame WR and TE. Great running backs. you gotta remember ricky waters could play, and the further you go back the better the team gets. this niners team can compete with the 94 superbowl team. I think they have waaaaaay better talent overall, but obviously kaepernick is no young

the defense needs help. justin smith is getting older, and aldon smith was nothing when justin was out. the secondary needs help too. whitner needs to be released. i like rodgers and goldson. culliver was terrible after week 8

Funny, the only spot on the field that the current Niners are better is ... Linebacker and tight end (but Brent Jones was hall of fame worthy, everywhere else favors the 94 team.

Better QBs, Better WR, Better defensive line, and better defensive secondary.

These 49ers haven't shown any kind of dominance that those teams did. They were close falling out of first place in their division, looked shaky at times during the season (and blown leads), squeaked by Atlanta, and were getting blown out in Super Bowl until the 3rd Quarter (still lost the game as well).

No team- ever- has "waaaaaaaay better talent overall" than a team with Steve Young, Jerry Rice and Deion Sanders in their primes. Have a look at the '94 team's roster, particularly the secondary. They were loaded.

The 2012 49ers aren't even as good as some of these Niners teams (that didn't even make it to Super Bowl).

Chiefs have traded for Smith, just signed Dwayne Bowe to a 5 year deal, tagged tackle Branden Albert, and signed Punter Dustin Colquitt to a 5 year deal, worth 18.75 million, making him the highest paid punter in the NFL.
