Dakota, I like your abiity to think out of the box-- including with the Rockets, generally.

I would say: have some of them babysit for the others kids; have others build houses and or public housing for them all. Not dissing the Haitians, but we have people here in bad shape, too.

You have a minor abstract point yet you don't get it.

In America like most advanced countries we don't like to see any of our fellow citizens suffer needlessly and $40k is about what is needed to avoid needless misery and to grow healthy children in a family so they can grow up to support even cold hearted conservatives like you in your old age--You know provide police services and medical services etc for your old age that can't be provided for you in a vacuum even if you count your pennies and have a substantial 401(k) which all conservatives always assume.

I suppose you think that raising children per se is not a valuable service to society that deserves support.

This is probably the stupidest argument I've ever seen on this forum, and that's saying a lot. I'd love to know how you concluded that a minimum income of $40000 per family is necessary to provide police services. Police services are funded by taxes, which I pay a substantial amount of and a family earning $0 and subsidized for $40000 pays none of. Funds are redistributed from me to provide police services to them, not the other way around.

You still haven't provided any justification for the $0 earner having the same standard of living as the $40000 earner, other than "waaaaah, think of the CHILDREN." If $40000 is the minimum income needed to avoid "needless misery," doesn't the person who actually earned that much (as opposed to leeching it off others) deserve better? You support perverse economic incentives by making it rational for people to stay home and do nothing unless they can get a job paying substantially more than $40000 per year.

JC,JC,JC health care and police services are provided by live human beings not mere money. If the society hasn't raised enough healthy well adjusted folks to do these jobs your 401K) won't automatically provide it.

JC mothers at home raising kids are not doing "nothing". i would refer you to feminsm in general and works talkng about human captial for society. I think you can actually make a very solid economic argument that they are doing more than folks earning wages in many industries such as the cigarette industry, the padde bra industry etc. though it does provide eye candy.
