Red Sox, Dustin Pedroia talk lucrative extension

The Boston Red Sox and Dustin Pedroia are discussing a contract extension that would make him the game’s highest-paid second baseman and could keep him with the team he has come to embody into the next decade, major league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

While one source said the parties still must bridge a gap in both dollars and years, both sides are motivated to strike a deal. The general framework of the contract could call for an annual salary in the $20 million range for a contract lasting five or six years – somewhere in the vicinity of the six-year, $100 million extension signed this offseason by Tampa Bay Rays third baseman Evan Longoria, sources said.

Pedroia, 29, has another year at $10 million remaining on his current deal, and the Red Sox own an $11 million option for 2015. Whether the new contract would replace the leftover years or add onto them remains another negotiating point.

The race between Oakland and Texas should be fun. Oakland has the pitching , Texas has the bats.

Really happy to get Edwards. Definitely needed some pitching in our farm.

seems like an awful deal for the rangers (esp. if they don't hang onto garza past this season). i know olt's stock has dropped, but he was their consensus #2 prospect a few months ago.

hope the stros make out this well in norris trade.

    Follow up:

According to a baseball source, the Red Sox and second baseman Dustin Pedroia have agreed to a seven-year, worth approximately $100 million extension that will begin following the final guaranteed year of his current deal. Pedroia is currently in the midst of six-year, $40.5 million deal that carries a team option for 2015.

The deal, according to the source, carries a full no-trade clause.

Yeah, who ever would have thought that?

Tied for 2nd in MLB, tied for 1st in the NL.

I'm not sure who is more surprising: him or Yadier Molina.

The Cardinals in general are ridiculous this year. Carpenter, Molina and Craig are all batting .321 or above this season. Throw in their rotation and they're looking like a World Series favorite again.

The Cardinals are definitely a great organization who have great stability and an understanding of how to manage resources at MLB level and have great scouting and replenishing their farm systems.

    He was here. Remember 2010?

    His defense was the problem.

I guess because of the Series ring he got with Philly? Disappointing to hear that, but he was only with us for 4 or 5 years I think.

Roy & Berkman should retire Astros, though.
