Tyson was never a real champion. He fought nothing but scrubs up to that point. The legend was always bigger than the man.
I don't think Mike Tyson ever fought in Asia again... I think he had some tainted sushi or something..
Dude. No. Not true. Yes, he started by fighting scrubs, but that's true of any boxer. He knocked out (not just defeated, but knocked out) Holmes (four rounds) and Spinks (one round), both former champs. Not scrubs. Not to mention, he beat the WBC champ (in two rounds), the IBF champ, and the WBA champ. First guy to hold all belts. You don't do that by fighting scrubs. There was no doubt in the mind of anyone who followed boxing that Mike Tyson was anything other than a very, very bad guy to eff with. The Douglas fight changed everything, exposed him as mortal, and changed the course of his career and (probably) his life in general, but before that fight, he was the greatest boxer in the world, bar none.
I didn't even think about watching that fight -- man, I was disappointed when I heard the results. Greatest upset in the history of sports.
I watched this last night on ESPN Classic...it was a great fight. They just don't make them like that anymore.
all true...for some reason though, i just don't think of him as a great Champion. maybe because all of the circus around him has clouded my memory.
I don't think that there is any doubt that Tyson was the best of his era but there just weren't any great fighters during that era. Both Spinks And Holmes were washed up when they fought Tyson and were just looking for one more big pay day.
Jesus Christ, you have to be ****ing kidding me. <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Xem-xQ8MEzU&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Xem-xQ8MEzU&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
Buster Douglas beating Mike Tyson was pretty substantial at 42:1. Right now, that would be equivalent to Toronto or Miami winning the NBA Finals, this year with their current rosters at one glance of raw numbers. While, on other hand, considering, you only have to beat one man (though a monster at time), ideally everything would seem to be 50/50 (at 2:1) in any fight...but 42:1 is lesser in basketball, because of the field. So, it is a given most teams odds are going to naturally be low (even the good teams), due to the law of numbers. Going against one man and only having a over a 2.38% chance of winning, almost seems like he has got a better chance killing an 80 foot fire breathing dragon. That's incredible or was Tyson just in meltdown mode? Is it the biggest ever? Hard to say, but I really want to say yes. Other big upsets include: Super Bowl III (Jets coming from the "supposedly inferior AFL had no chance against the powerhouse Colts...I'd liken this to a slightly above average USFL team who had great year, especially down the stretch coming over and beating the Redskins or 49ers in the Super Bowl in the late 80s) Appalachian State knocks off #5 Michigan, First I-AA school to defeat an I-A AP ranked team ever (and it was a road game for Mountaineers). Outside of Buster Douglas, I think this one, along with Miracle on Ice is the most impressive. The Miracle on Ice: US Hockey Team of 1980 defeats the Soviet Union en route to a gold medal victory over Sweden (Two gigantic upsets in one tournament) 1994 NBA Playoffs: Nuggets defeat Supersonics in 5 games, becoming the first 8th seeded team to upset at #1 seed. For the Nuggets, the upsets wouldn't quite nearly come to end, after being down 3 games to 0 against the Utah Jazz. The Nuggets fought tough through 3 more games (even a double over time victory in game 5) pushing the Jazz to a game 7, becoming first team ever to come back from 3-0 down to reach game 7. The "Amazin-Miracle" Mets of 69 winning the World Series, 08 Devil Rays even reaching the World Series, you look at both teams in their given leagues and you almost instantly scratch your head, especially both teams finished the season at 100 and 97 wins a piece. More so for the Devil Rays who were up against the two ($200+ Million) empire. 1994-95 Houston Rockets defeating the Jazz, Suns, Spurs, and Magic en route to their 2nd Championship. http://www.insidehoops.com/forum/showthread.php?t=162632 (This one is a little controversial, since no one picked the Rockets to win in this season, except maybe Rocket fans...yet they were the defending champions). 2007 Stanford beating USC (42 point favorite) http://www.campussqueeze.com/post/The--14-Biggest-Upsets-In-College-Football-History.aspx (Nowadays, these victories wouldn't really be considered upset given the talent of the big conferences). 2007 the New York Football Giants defeat the 13-3 Cowboys, 13-3 Packers, and the undefeated (18-0) Patriots en route to their 3rd Super Bowl, while being a road team in every game. Which may stand as the most impressive run in NFL playoff history. It's not only outstanding for their win over the Pats, but the first WC team in history to beat two 13 win team and undefeated (or one loss) team on the road. 2009 Manatee Community College Lancers defeat the (top prospects of) the Pittsburgh Pirates This one is either speaks to how impressive the Lancers played that day, or how impotent the Pirates have become. Also, Manatee only have about 7,500 students currently enrolled. Hard to say, where this one could go, since most people will laugh it off as Pirates being ... laughably horrible or the squad being filled with prospects, not to many major leaguers. But, you have to remember these were top prospects (major league bound) and they're losing to a freaking community college that couldn't even fill one section of their stadium. http://community.post-gazette.com/b...04/02/manatee-shocks-world-beats-pirates.aspx http://deadspin.com/5197575/a-few-fun-facts-about-the-manatee-cc-win-over-the-pirates http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburghtrib/sports/pirates/s_618998.html
Apparently...but I'm sure it didn't have commentary in broking English. I played once back some years ago, not a bad game...good weekend rental I guess. <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Y_XqaPOGiII&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Y_XqaPOGiII&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
