So I have been rocking a gigabit line for years, but I noticed that I can now go up faster for a few more $$$ per month. 1gb runs me $70 per month 2gb would be $100 per month 5gb would be $120 per month 8gb would be $150 per month So I could on the top end pay 2 times what I am paying but get 8 times the speed. What are your speeds, and why did you choose what you did? I am definitely going to go up, at least to 2 but am considering 5.... DD
I pay $40 for 500 Mb. It's enough for my family and somewhere I can save with every other cost going up.
I have 1 gig with google and it's enough. one thing though I have never seen it close to a gig ever. so yeah
If 1gb has been enough, then stick with that. You can always upgrade later. Your Internet company will be happy to charge you more if you want them to. If you're intent on spending more money, stick with the 1gb but send me $50/mo. That way it's a win/win for everyone.
Calling it “speed” is a sales tactic. It’s really volume. Calling it speed isn't really appropriate as much as it used to be, since you can never dl faster than the source can output per user. So, don't expect 8 times the speed per app, except for when you go to a speedtest site. It's best to just think of bandwidth as ... well ... bandwidth. I'd say 8gb fiber is really for coffee shops and other locations with dozens and dozens of devices streaming data concurrently. I'd also seek advice on whether your hardware and wifi bandwidth is enough to support 8gb.
TIL that lines of speed are called gigabits. What will these crazy gen Z’s think of next? Don’t do drugs, kids.
IMO the network speed is less important than the quality of the network hardware. Routers can and do get overwhelmed if there are too many devices connected, and with the IoT I have like 20 devices on my mesh network. And if your devices are older but wireless, they are really not able to take advantage of the bandwidth giga fiber will give you. I am slowly reverting back to non-connected devices because I am finding these smart home devices do break after a few years. I have 1G fiber and it is enough for four people to stream at 1080p/4K at the same time. It's enough for my work where I need to be able to download a gigabyte of data in a few seconds. Unless 8K video becomes the norm, I have no reason to consider upgrading to faster for a family of 4.
I’ll be in Austin in a couple weeks, @DaDakota - can you hook me up with your gigabit guy? I go hard. 8gb? Pshh. 32gb…maybe even 64gb if there are strippers. Money no object, dm me fam.
No, it would require a new router from them as well as 3 nest devices. I have a series of wifi repeaters, and access points I put in, that give 2.4 and 5ghz throughout the house, but we have a ton of TV's and Ipad and phones and printers and PCs in this house, more than 40 devices, so I am leaning towards 5gb. DD
tons of devices dont mean you need 5gb... what if 400 devices are using a total of 30mbps at once..? the hell you gonna do with the rest of it....? this seems like such a waste of money.
if you're a content creator the upload speed is probably more important than download. if you haven't noticed a bottleneck why pay more?
I work remotely and have large downloads of builds all the time - It would help speed things up considerably DD
That can serve you at 8gbs? You're just bragging you can get 8gbs. lame. If you want it, get it. This is not a big financial decision.
I support @Haymitch request to get $50/month from @DaDakota while DD also does the ultimate flex move and gets the $150/month service. Win win for everybody.
