    Sir Jackie Chiles,

Neither of your proposed deals would work under the cap, because you're doing the calculation incorrectly.

Here's how it works with a BYC player.

Say Team A has a first year BYC player (player x) that makes $4M per year and they want to trade him to team B (assume both team A and B are over the cap).

For the purpose of the trade, player x's trade value is calculated at only 50% of his salary ($2M) for Team A's side of the deal.

But, for team B's side of the deal, player x still counts the full amount ($4M).

The way you are doing the calculation, you would show team B, just sending back $2M in salary (player y). But, that won't work. Here's how the calculation actually works.

Team A sends player X to team B - Since player x is 1st year BYC , then he only counts at 50% of his salary for team A's side of the trade.
Player x counts full salary ($4M) toward team B's side of the deal.

Team B sends player y to team A. Player B counts $2M against both teams sides of the trade.

So, the final results look like this:

    Team A:
    ------------
gives up $2M in salary (50% of player x's salary). This part of the deal works because team A takes back an amount within 15% of what they gave up.

    Team B:
    ------------
gives up $2M in salary and takes back $4M in salary (100% of player x's salary).
This is not alloed because team B is taking back more than 115% + 100K of the salary that they gave up.

Remember, that for salary matching purposes, both sides of the deal are calculated independently of the other. Also, BYC trade values only count for the team trading the player, NOT for the team receiving the player (they count full value towards the receiving teams trade amount).

That's why if you are going to trade a BYC player, you need either
    1) a team with enough cap space to absorb the difference between the player's actual salary and their BYC value.
    2) a team with a trade exception large enough to absorb the difference between the player's actual salary and their BYC value
    3) You make the total salaries involved on both sides large enough so that the difference between the player's actual salary and their BYC value can be absorbed by the 15% difference that is allowable by CBA rules.

Do you see the difference in how it's calculated?

    SJC, aelliott, hp -

Here's the way to get Rashard even though he will be a BYC player if he signs for more than ~$5.2m!

It is reported that the Bulls want Jay Williams more than they want Ming. Since they are under the cap, it may be possible to get them to commit to taking a small ($2m-$4m or KT) contract in exchange for a guarantee that the Rocks will NOT consider offers for Williams. Perhaps throw in a pick.

This is bordeline but if we do not specifically mention Lewis, I don't feel it is against the CollBA.

I realize it's a long shot and the sequence of events is wacked because the Rockets can't deal for Rashard until after the draft and after he lets his option expire, but it may be a possibility.

aelliott, GATER, thanks a lot for your responses. Looks like it would be much harder to acquire Lewis than I thought - too bad. I just wish we could do something like we did with Mo Taylor - signing Lewis for the MCE for a year and then give him a larger contract.

But I have a feeling that Lewis will sign for something close to the max with the Sonics.
