RIP I remember him from 81' playoffs (part of the reason I still h8 the Celts). He was part of the first wave of Rockets when I began supporting the team as an 8 year old.
Great Rocket legend. He was one of my favorite Rockets I watched growing up in the Don Cheney era. RIP
That team with Rudy T, Calvin, Mike Newlin and Bobby Jo was my favorite. I would to go to the Wheeler Ave YMCA on Saturdays just to watch them play pick up games. My heart is filled with sadness today because we've lost a great one. RIP Bobby Jo!
Crazy, he was so young. Remember Game 6 against the Celts, he was great... I turn 64 on Sat, guess you never know when your time is up.
thanks for posting this. IIRC, the Rockets lost both finals series to the Celtics by the same 4-2 score. remarkable they could hang that well with prime Bird, Parrish, and McHale. I remember RR having an idiosyncratic jump shot, taking the ball behind his head before release, but it looks a lot smoother in that video than I remembered.
RIP to Bobby Joe. One of my all time favorite Rockets. He was very involved in the charity that my Dad worked for so I actually got to meet him many times. He was as cool off the court as he was on the court. A genuinely great person.
Wayyyy too early. Two of my favorite Rockets from the 80s are gone in Lew Lloyd and Robert Reid. Both guys were instrumental in getting this Ohio guy to become a huge Houston Rockets fan in the mid 80s.
Remember him on that ‘86 team. A really good player and a class act. He was moved to point guard when Jon Lucas was suspended for drugs. He stepped in and had to take on Magic Johnson and Larry Bird in the playoffs and NBA Finals and held his own.
Great memories of watching him play. First Rockets game I ever went to (85ish?), Reid sunk a half court shot going into the half. Thoughts out to family, friends and basketball fans.
Terrible news and yes, far too young. He was one of my favorite players and played against the best. Rest in peace, Bobby Joe.
Oh man...I loved Bobby Joe. I used to mimic his jump shot at the gym. Loved his shooting style. Thanks for the great memories as a Rocket. You will be missed!
RIP Bobby Joe! 80-81 finals appearance was when I really started to get into being a Rockets fan as a youngster. Taking down the Lakers in 85-86 couldn't have happened without him. He was the only PG (although he moved from SF after Lucas got busted with coke) that had the size to disrupt Magic.
