So I was getting dinner last week via Uber Eats and Killen`s popped up for a bbq choice so I was like hell yea, let's see what all the hype is, got the 2 meat platter with ribs and brisket and potato salad and baked beans. The ribs were ok, the brisket was a thick cut which was nice and it was good, not great. The sides were underwhelming, and the onions were liked pickled which I didn't care for. It was a 6 out of 10 for me. I have a hole in the wall bbq joint by my work at Clay and Gessner called Virgies, its a small place with like 5 tables but always busy, IMO its better, I always get the sliced BBQ brisket sandwich with chips and drink for like $14.00 https://virgiesbbqcatering.com/
Gatlins is the only one I see that still is very generous with the portions. I know Gatlins isn't consider "sexy" anymore, it's been awhile since they made a Texas Monthly list but they are consistent, the service is great, and you get a mountain of food for the price you pay, which isn't cheap but I don't feel like I get ripped off.
if you ever in SW side of Houston, specifically ghetto Alief, try this hole in the wall hidden gem.... their brisket is da bomb. https://guillorysbarbque.com/
Does anyone have suggestions for places between Houston and Conroe? I'll be trying out Corkscrew bbq, curious to know if there's any others I should check out as well.
Well I went to Truth in Houston - really good. Corkscrew in Spring - also really good. Went to Terry Blacks and Kreuz in Lockhart and both were honestly very disappointing. Heim on Magnolia in Fort Worth is still my all time favourite bbq place, every single time I go there it is perfect.
There's a little hole in the wall food truck called Gessner's BBQ off of Sawdust that's legit. Only open during the week though.
i tried terry blacks in lockhart for the first time a couple weeks ago and was pleasantly surprised. the big disappointment for me has been my last couple trips to smittys. it used to be my favorite lockhart BBQ joint, but the brisket there was tough as leather. dont know whats going on, but ive been eating there for over 25 years and its definitely not the same. blacks is always consistent, but i feel like its gotten pricey. havent been to kreuz in years. im going to hit it up next time im there. if youre in austin you gotta try morenos on manchaca. really, really good stuff. i havent had a burger there yet, but more than one person has told me they are doing the best in town right now.
A Queens Boy’s Tour of Austin BBQ includes reviews of Valentina's, InterStellar, Salt Lick, and Terry Black's. https://mailchi.mp/nycbbq/smoke-sweats-tour-of-austin-bbq?e=92c90ff1b0
James Beard just named Barbs-B-Q as one of the best new restaurants in 'Merica. https://www.jamesbeard.org/blog/the-2024-james-beard-awards-semifinalists https://www.texasmonthly.com/bbq/barbs-b-q-lockhart/ Now watch timmy and other's heads explode.
Thoughts? I almost passed out when I saw that Sam Houston's WASN'T Mount Zion Baptist Church....until I researched and saw that they changed their name to Holy Smoke.
I believe the Old Pastor retired and New Zion BBQ officially closed. It was his daughter who re-opened it a while later. not sure if it still tastes the same or has the same experience, but I'm totally down with trying it out. I used to love the old 80yr old lady worker that would break out into a hymn while you were eating..and expected you to join in.
Franklins is still better than all of those . I've been to Goldee's and Interstellar It's political because you can't have the same #1 all the time. But do your own taste tests. Truth and Corkscrew are pretty even to me, Think Truth has better ribs
