Cool thread, I still have pretty much all my cards from my ‘90s collecting days. Used to love going to card shows with my dad. It’d be neat to see a McGwire spike I probably have 10 of his rookie cards. Would be nice to see some prices similar to what they were back in the day. I had a stunning Jordan 87 BGS 8.5 that I sold for something like $175 3 or 4 years ago. I think it was undergraded too. Looks like it’s at least 450-500 now. I have a couple ungraded 88 fleers that I feel look fantastic plus countless other random Jordan’s. I wonder if I can get them graded before this bubble pops?
Remembering my big trades as a Kid. First Trade Ever: Willie Stargell 1979 for Nolan Ryan 1978. Seemed fair. I remember sweating. It was tense. Worst Trade: Traded Karl Malone and Xavier McDaniel '87 rookies for Olajuwon '88 . Oops First Price guide: 1985, It had listed a 1983 Ryne Sandberg at $5, and that's when I knew my cards were worth crap. I had to learn more and get better. The first card I can ever remember having: 1978 Terry Bradshaw. It was not treated well as I lined them on the floor and smashed them together, like a football game. Best maneuver: I got a kid to break up his 1986 traded set so I could get Billy Hatcher and Jose Canseco. I worked my ass off to get him to do that. It was like an 8 day negotiation against his mother's will. Favorite buy ever: Olajuwon Star rookie for $9 at card store.
Some of the prices are getting nuts. Fleer Ultra Kobe rookies that were $25 all day long are now in the hundreds. I do think there is a bubble at this point, but people are bored at home and ESPN is cranking out nostalgia docs. I saw even guys like Ricky Henderson are starting to move up. Various McGwire rookies that were 50 cents are now $10. His USA rookie is $25!!! Astounding.
I'm not a collector, but there is strong demand for rare cards, especially in good shape (they were basically a game toy) that are graded. The huge one is first and second edition (alpha and beta) Magic The Gathering cards. Unbelievable prices. The very famous Black Lotus Alpha was as low as $5,000 a couple years ago now sell for $50,000 to $100,000 depending on condition. There are several more like that. Just saw an Antiques Roadshow where a lady brought in her husbands alpha and beta sets and the dude valued them at $100,000 ungraded. These things are from 1993...not 1953.
Yeah, my response wasn't clear. The first sentence was meant to be about Pokemon...there are some rare and valuable ones. I then pivoted (not very clearly) to Magic. I just re-read my post and its pretty terrible in the confusion.
The complete glossy first set is ~$1,200 to 1,400 ungraded. Some of the really important cards are thousands if graded highly. Complete wax boxes can sell for $20,000. An overlooked part of this is the nostalgia collecting from people that are now in their late 30s to 40s that grew up with this stuff. Every generation it happens. People become middle aged, have discretionary income, and begin re-collecting the stuff they grew up with. Anything 80s and early 90s is exploding in price. Toys: Transformers, Master of the Universe, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, GI Joe Cards: All those junk era cards, plus the mid 80s stuff is starting to increase. Bronze/Copper age comics are starting to increase: Any late 80s to mid 90s stuff that was 3/$1 is now starting to pop a little bit. $2 Amazing Spiderman comics are now $10, $20, $30... Those 80s/90s cars are becoming "vintage" and are starting to increase in price. The cars people grew up with. Its the "Xennial" time frame right now. If you were born from ~1977 - 1984....the stuff you grew up with is increasing in value. Even stuff that was "junk" and "collected" in those periods of mass production. Little gems are popping up.
That’s one pro for getting old. I’m 50/50 that I still have those cards. I either stashed them in my attic or lost them in the Hurricane Ike flood. I’ll check next time I’m in there. I do have my entire comic collection, 3k total comics that I collected from the mid 80s to mid 90s when the comic ‘boom’ burned me out.
Unopened 1986-87 Fleer case, featuring dozens of Michael Jordan rookie cards, sells for $1.8M https://sports.yahoo.com/michael-jo...unopened-rare-fleer-basketball-140617600.html
How much does it cost to get your cards graded?... I have a couple Griffey rookie cards in my garage.... I haven't looked at my card collection in 10+ years..
depends. Tons out there but a PSA 10 Griffey is around a couple hundred. Not too crazy due to the shear amount of there but still an iconic card. PSA if you don’t care for time frame about ~$11/card depending BGS is another option but I wouldn’t do any other besides those
Quick question... Can you even sell your cards on EBay without getting them graded?... Is there a big differential in value?
yeah you can. Huge market on eBay to sell even raw (ungraded) cards. a psa 10 will go for about 4-5x the value of a raw card. A pristine 10 or black label 10 from BGS can go about 10x or more the value of a raw card. but be aware, gem mint cart is actually pretty tough to get, even from a freshly pulled pack. Trying to sell anything?
