On the flip side, I don’t mind if guys swing/miss at strikes. They’re going to eventually catch up to those pitches as well. Right now, they’re guilty of not swinging at hittable pitches in situations that could lead to more runs. They’re also not picking up (stealing) as many signs from 2B that they did last year... Beltran’s one major contribution to the early season hitting success.
Been reading the Yankees subreddit. So much salt right now trying to make them feel better about themselves
All of that is great, but do you not understand that certain situations call for different approaches? That's really all I've been saying.
I'm the opposite. I hate swings at bad pitches with less than 2 strikes. Sure, it is better to swing at hittable pitches if a batter identifies it. Swinging at pitches that a batter doesn't identify is going to lead to more than just swings at grooved pitches and will allow pitchers to throw less fastballs. When Astros are guessing right on pitches, it is beautiful.
Not a huge deal, but I don't particularly like Charlie throwing 100+ pitches. He has injury history and there's no no-no on the line. Excellent game though, and season thus far. Let's make sure he gets the win.
Swinging at strikes, historically, leads to runs. Yes, swinging only at pitches that you guess right on is great in theory... until a team gets enough advanced scouting data to change the pattern. In the end, hitters succeed when they have the god-given eye/talent to recognize pitches out of the pitchers hand... and square them up when they’re in the zone. Marwin did a much better job of that last year. You can’t automatically presume that pitchers didn’t study tendencies and attempt to make adjustments to him.
