There were some things about 8 I didn’t like, like Leia flying through space, but I’m not clear why there is so much hatred for it. It wasn’t nearly as formulaic or cookie cutter as 7. I guess that is why I found parts of it refreshing. I haven’t seen 9 yet.
yeah, I just now saw 8 on a plane. I skipped it largely due to the vitriol on here and the Mary poppins crap, but to me it was slightly better than 7. I liked the throne room scene. And warp drive kamikazi was far from the most ridiculous Star Wars plot device. I found 7 one of the more useless and formulaic of all.
Saw it yesterday, and have had some time to debrief with friends (some who hated it, some who were indifferent). I liked it. Was there stuff that could be improved? Of course. But I think it was a fitting end to the series that definitely had its ups and downs. I hear a lot of people saying 'that's not how the Force works'....well, this is Star Wars canon now, so that's exactly how it works, like it or not No one hates Star Wars more than its fans...
Absolutely hated 8... Leia flying, the whole casino scene, the disservice to Luke’s ( no way he turns into someone who doesn’t care) character, the acting as a whole, the ill timed humor, Rose’s character (not her fault). I could go on and on. Rian Johnson just didn’t pull it off. Felt like he took a huge dump on the series. I was all for bringing something different to the story, but it was poorly executed. I really enjoyed RoS. Was there much new? Not really I guess. Did there need to be much new? I don’t think so. Spoiler: Spoiler Palpatine was a bad ass and I thought every scene he was in was damn good. Loved seeing that come full circle. People complain about he pace, but I felt like it was almost necessary. They were under the gun to make things happen, they only had 16 hours until total destruction. I thought they pulled off Leia really well with what happened. They did Leia a real solid making her a badass. She never fully got the credit she deserved until now. To me there wasn’t really anything hokey in it. TLJ was full of hokey garbage.
agree with all of that, but 7 was worse (for me), and 8 still was better than I expected, now that I've finally seen it.
Just got back from seeing it and I loved it so much that I'm actually logging on to CF on a weekend! My favorite part of it was that they finally got rid of the First Order and replaced it with the good ol' Empire - they way it should have been all along. Seeing all those Imperial Star Destroyers may or may not have given me a little wood.... i really liked and appreciated Poe's comedic timing. His funny lines were well timed and delivered perfectly, I thought. Easter eggs galore! I really felt they did a good job of wrapping up the entire trilogy. One other thing, it's so much more fun seeing this movie as just a fan instead of a hardcore fanboy. I never read up on 9 at all, never even watched a trailer. Went in totally cold....and glad I did it that way.
will watch tomorrow, so super excite! weird that i enjoyed ep7 and really enjoyed ep8 in the movies... but felt a bit differently after reading yall breh's reviews and other forums. hopefully this one will be very good and have rewatchability value.
I’ll start by saying that I’ve never been a big Star Wars fan so that might be why none of it had any emotional impact for me. Personally, I was bored for the better part of it. It felt robotic and perfunctory where Abrams had a check list of items he wanted to get done and set about doing them with little to no flow, worse of all there was really not mystery to the whole thing, IMO….. C-
It's not as bad as the reviews/RT % score suggests but it's not in any way the clearcut best out of the 3. I didn't mind the length of the movie nor the multiple sidequests that critics complained about. I enjoyed the movie but there was so much fan service within this movie to pacify the whiny "diehard" fans that some of the plot felt contrived. I honestly give it a C+, maybe B-. TLJ was not without its flaws but I appreciate the creative/artistic liberties taken by Johnson. If I wanted to watch the same old story from the original trilogy I would just, well, watch the original trilogy. I get that Abrams wanted to go with the nostalgic approach to start the new trilogy but to basically sample the entire storyline from ANH is just lazy and typical Abrams. In the end, the best Star Wars movie from the Disney era is still Rogue One by a long distance.
The people that hate TLJ and make Rian Johnson out to be a villain are people that want to put a thumb into their mouths, curl up into a fetus and pretend that Star Wars should tell the same basic story over and over again. Johnson has proven more than once that his films are excellent and, when given the green light, he can make great films. Disney/Abrams didn't set him up to succeed because of how TFA ended up being just a basic cookie cutter rehash of ANH. I'm sure Johnson thought, okay maybe I can go the safe route and do a ESB homage for TLJ with family plot twists and call it a day. But that's not who he is as a writer and story teller. Then when he actually tries to put a new spin on the trilogy petulant fanboys cry murder while clutching onto their Slave Leia dolls. Disney/Abrams should have either laid out the entire storyline for all 3 movies out from the very beginning OR support the directions each director would have taken with their respective movies. They did neither and that's why we get a ESB and ROTJ tribute rolled up into one movie in ROTS
I never took Star Wars seriously. I thought this movie was great. 9/10. But I also liked the other 2 that everyone else hated. The trilogy for me would be rated - 8, 7, 9. Ultimately the new characters failed to establish the same lasting appeal as the ogs. But I do like that they were all about redemption. Oh and Kyle. Who again, seems everyone hates. Thought he was dope. Great actor. Do not @ me.
That was a perfectly fine Star Wars movie. Obviously a few glaring problems, but most of them are mainly due to the wild swings they've been experiencing from movie to movie in this new trilogy. But it was better than Last Jedi, no question. 7/10
Have tickets to see this Christmas Day. After the trash that was The Last Jedi, I’m cautiously optimistic.
As someone with just mild fandom in Star Wars, my problem with 8 is that he essentially did a stand-alone movie. He basically didn’t use anything from 7 besides character names and he used a Luke Skywalker from New Hope who literally never developed. He wasn’t bold, he was just an ass about it. Then he threw in a completely nonsensical casino detour. There’s a legit criticism that 9 had too much fan service, but 8 had none and that was disappointing. There are some badass moments in it and it’s better than every single one of the prequels but it let me down after 7.
I wonder how long it will take for someone to release an edited episode 7-8-9 movie, like has been done with LOTR and the Hobbit.
Now they can get away from the skywalker story and do the old republic and knock it out of the park. Although fan boys will still b**** when Darth Trayas socks are the wrong color
