Will I save money buying a car in TX vs VA?

i can tell you that it only cost me about $700 to have my car transported from Houston to Northern VA.. so you can factor that cost in if you're flying over. Or you can factor in the mileage if you're driving it over

 

I believe you still have to pay for TX state taxes even if you buy it somewhere else. I had to when I bought mine in FL.

 

I shipped my car from Houston to NYC for $550 about 6 months ago when gasoline was at $4.00 a gallon. It should be much cheaper these days.

 

Couple of years ago I bought a new car from a family friend in WV. When I got down to NC and went for plates I had to pay almost a thousand dollars (instead of the usual $200 or so) for them. The state will find a way to get their money....

 

Where did you get the idea that there is "no state tax" on vehicle sales in Texas?

There definitely is, and the rate is 6.25%. Maybe you were thinking about no state tax on income?

 

It's probably going to cost you more in taxes to buy it in Texas and then re-register it in Va. Check to see which one has a lower sales tax rate and which the prices on cars in the zip code where you will be moving to see if there is a significant difference.

You will have to pay sales tax on it in Texas and then if I recall correctly there is a vehicle tax in Virginia as well.

Look up to see what the rule is in registering a car in VA. I know in KY we have to pay vehicle tax every year to renew our car license and I am pretty sure that includes paying something when registering an out of state vehicle in KY when you move.

 

I could have gotten it a lot cheaper (mine was 4 years ago).. but I went with one of the more reputable places with a good record with the BBB, etc. so that's why I ended up at $700
