I know that some of you might think that I should post this in the Korver to Cavs thread, but I think that this question stands on its own. I would file this trade under suspicious things that the nba does. Two questions I have: First, how is it not gaming the system to do what the cavs are doing, by retroactively changing the terms of an agreed upon deal, for the express purpose to make another deal that they would not otherwise be able to make. Edit: Secondly, what is in it for Portland?I am corrected: they are getting a 2017 pick instead of a 2018 pick, so I got it now. I misunderstood the terms originally.
Teams make trades to help themselves. They were due the 2018 pick, which was top 10 protected. They will now get the 2017 pick, unprotected. I see. It's just suspicious to me that nobody else wanted korver but the cavs. In my opinion, Portland should not have made that deal. Sure they get a first rounder this year which will be nearly a second rounder. They should have asked for much more than that. They did nothing but help the cavs out.
Well that's where you're wrong. It's not that no one else wanted Korver; it's just the Cavs were probably the only team that offered a 1st Rounder. It's not far fetched to think other teams were offering 2nd Rounders due to Korver's age and his game only being a huge HUGE benefit to a select few teams (Cavs, Warriors, Rockets, etc.). And from all the reports early on, the 2017 draft will be pretty deep, meaning an asset for next year's draft can be an added benefit for a trade.
They aren't winning this year, Korver going to Cleveland isn't going to change that. Maybe they'll get lucky with a mid-draft pick though...it makes complete sense for them.
Am I missing something here? What does Portland have to do with Atlanta making a trade with cavs? Did Portland facilitate anything ?
Yes. Portland helped get Cavs Channing Frye last year. Now they help Cavs get Korver. Cavs needed Portland to trade pick because they couldn't trade 2018 pick. They could only trade 2019 pick. Portland gave them back their 2019 pick. Last year they took Sideshow pick and his $15 million contract and then waived him immediately before he even joined the team. clearing up cap space to take up Frye's $32 million contract...even though Cavs have 4 max players, LBJ, LOVE, KYRIE, TTBOY
I think it's moreso no one else would give up a 1st for him. He's a 36 year old unrestricted free agent. Only a few teams would likely give up anything for him, and all were probably contending teams.
