When did "shut up" become a bad phrase?

    It seems that lots of parents I know get on to their kids when their kids tell somebody to "shut up". I can understand it when a kid says that to an adult, because that's just disrespectful, but these parents don't even let their kids say that to other kids.

    This was NEVER an issue when I was a kid. I didn't even realize that "shut up" was so taboo until I became an adult and my sister started berating me when I would jokingly tell somebody to "shaddup", and she explained that she didn't want my nephew "picking up bad language". I only seem to remember about 10 or 15 bad words growing up, and "shut" or "up" wasn't among them.

    I'm never going to be ready for parenthood. :)

    It was always an issue when I was a kid regardless of who we may have said it to. (60s and 70s).

    My parents think "pissed off" is bad language even though I don't think it is. I consider it an accurate representation of what I feel at times.

    I was suspended from Bellaire Senior High School for shooting off 15 bottle rockets in a hallway (ala Jim Brown's final scene in "The Dirty Dozen") when I was a freshman in 1977.

    It's not the words, it's the intonation. Shut up can be funny, an exclamation of surprise or a dismissal of another person worth or calling them a liar.
    They could be fightin words.

    i've always liked to scream, "SHUT THE FFFFRONT DOOR!" when i'm tired of someone's lip and did it a couple of times in a loud movie theater. it gets alot of laughs and somewhat effective.

    I knew some kids who got in trouble for saying "shut up". They weren't allowed to watch Tom & Jerry either. Their parents were freaks.

    IMHO...

    "bad language" refers to profanity. This includes "pissed", "damn", and "crap" as well as other hard profanity.

    There are other things that really just don't sound good for a 5-year-old girl to say, such as "shut up" or "you're stupid".

    My wife and I don't say those things to each other or to our daughter because it's disrespectful, mean, and a poor way to communicate.

    We don't punish our daughter for saying "shut up", but we stop her and say, "hey, that's not a very good thing to say. Don't say that." That seems to work just fine.

    "Shut up" is incredibly disrespectful. We never said that in my family growing up. And I don't let my daughter say it. That doesn't mean she gets punished for it. I just tell her- "Don't say shut up." It's just basic respect towards others.

    I would have no problem with her saying she was "pissed off" and while I don't like hearing "that sucks" I don't correct her for it now (she's a high school senior) though I did when she was younger. These are just comments about your own state of mind or opinion, not obnoxious directions to someone else.


    She's let a couple real cuss words slip in the last year (like ****), when she thought I couldn't hear her or wasn't paying attention. That was immediately corrected.
