http://www.ananova.com/news/story/sm_1304737.html?menu= Germans discover a cabbage-loving gene Germans love for cabbage may be down to their genes. Cabbage, which is the main ingredient in saurkraut, is eaten in Germany in vast quantities. Scientists at the German Institute for Food Research in Potsdam near Berlin have found a genetic reason to love cabbage in the form of taste gene hTAS2R38. They say the gene - which they believe most Germans have -makes some people extraordinarily sensitive to the bitter substances phenylthiocarbamide (PTC) and propylthiouracil (PROP) present in large quantities in cabbage. "The variations of a single gene therefore affect a person's eating habits," said Wolfgang Meyerhof, who led the research team. The institute said the research was being published in the journal Current Biology.
That's kind of cool. I mean if we can break down stuff like that to basic elements and find genes receptive to them, does that mean even musical taste could be genetic? Like a certain sound in songs or a certain rythm is more pleasing to the ears of some than to others?
any world with Uma is a good one... well maybe not but it is of some solace to me I don't think the world is ready for the hard questions genetic manipulation is going to bring, apparently sooner rather than later I think we're pretty close to finding the keys to much longer healthier lives for instance... what does THAT do to the social security system? and that's just question 1... once the genetic code and the proteins they control are fully understood we'll be trying to answer questions we can't even imagine right now
