This looks like it will be a pretty good show. Rehashing some of the great 80's rap groups will be pretty cool. I sure hope they hit some on Mantronix, LA Dream Team, Newcleus, and MC Shan...to name a few. VH1's Hip Hop Honors Also...for those of you who grew up during the 80's and the kangol revolution...have you seen that Burger King commercial where the guys are totally 80's old school rapped out? Have you been watching the documentary on Hip-Hop? The five part series that started Monday at 9:00 PM Central. Its easily the most informative hip hop documentary I’ve ever seen on the subject. It started Monday with how Hip Hop started in the Bronx in the seventies and moved to the Sugar Hill Gang and some of the early groups. Then last night’s piece was on the rise of Def Jam, Run DMC, Beastie Boys, LL Cool J, Public Enemy, and Fresh Prince. They also talked about Yo MTV Raps, and other rappers during the eighties, girl groups etc. And tonight they talk about the rise of Gangsta Rap. No Mainstream medium such as VH1 has ever had a comprehensive and informative documentary on the early years of hip-hop IMHO. It was really done well. Just judging by the names in your first post, I bet the Hip Hop Honors are going to be just as good. I’m glad some of those groups are going to get the respect they deserve. Any television program about rap history that has Fifty, Eminem, Tupac, and Biggie as the five greatest rappers of all time is just ridiculous and that is usually what you get with these programs. VH1 has really done their homework this time.
I was wondering if the Hip Hop Honors was the same things as the documentary that was on last night. It sorta sounded like the same thing but the HHH says that it starts on the 12th. Either way, I wish I had caught the beginning of the documentary. I'll definitely be trying to catch the first episodes whenever they rerun.
It looks like they were trying to make them look like specific rappers. The 2 guys on the bench from what I recall - one looks like a DMC impersonation and another one looks like an LL Cool J impersonation. Regarding the 5 part documentary - I wish I had known it was on. I would've recorded it. Hopefully they'll replay it soon.
They replayed several parts last night. I'm thinking it was 3, 4 and 5. I caught the end of 3 which was talking about the Sugarhill Gang and such. The next hour covered Run DMC, LL Cool J, and the Beastie Boys. It was very interesting...brought back a ton of memories. It was nice to hear some of today's top rap acts acknowledge the groups that started everything and to thank them for the inroads that they created. Rick Rubin was an absolute stud! Running Def Jam records from his NYU dorm room. Classic!
