I'm running Windows 98 on my computer and I just did a bunch of hardware upgrades. Is it worth it to upgrade to XP? Is system performance improved? Where can I get it cheap? I go to A&M and I've heard rumors of being able to by at a student rate that is really cheap, is this true? Any suggestions would be welcome.
Here is a thread about best prices for XP.http://207.44.140.146/php3/showthread.php?s=&threadid=39237 Whether or not to upgrade has to be a personal decision. I would say no. but thats because I'm more than happy with Win2k, I've tried XP and wasn't impressed. I ended up changing the interface back to classic style..the only advantage I saw was that some of my newer games ran better on XP. I think there was a thread awhile back about this subject, I'll try to find it.
Since you're running Windows 98, yes upgrade. Windows 9x and ME are junk. Win 2k and XP are less junk.
As to what R2K said I agree. If you have Win2k there really isn't a great need to go out and spend money on an upgrade. However, you have win98. I used win98 for a good while(along with NT and win95). When my office went to 2k I was highly amazed at how stable it was compared to the others. Knowing this I would highly recommend an upgrade from 98. You should see it run smoother and maybe a little quicker. I did hav eto tweak the interface a little becasue I was not real comfortable with the changes they made(especially to the start bar) so a lot of my settings went back to classic mode. CK
From what I understand(and I could be wrong) the microsoft os progression goes like this: We'll start with Win95. Microsoft introduced win95 for home PC's. They also introduced WinNT for more business oriented machines. WinNT does not run directX so it was incapable of running many games and certain graphics software but it supposedly had better networking features and security for business that wanted to set up Intranets and be internet capable. After a few minutes everyone realized Win95 was real buggy and was pretty crappy. It looked kinda like a MAC os but functioned like a broken dishwasher. So then comes Win98 "The upgrade". It supposedly fixed a lot of the problems in Win95. Well yeah maybe it fixed some of them but it created a bunch too. So we get the fix for that in Win98SE,which i used for a while and it wasn't bad, It wasn't great either. All this time WinNT is still out there for businesses. It was pretty good and did what most businesses needed but home users couldn't use it because it wouldn't play games(arrrgggh). So the mighty microsoft says, "We hear your gaming pain and we will help you. Behold the ever Awesome WinME". And they give us a "new" os that is basically a repackaged 98SE with some new backgrounds, themes and a couple of new apps. So then we start getting some actual progression. Win 2k comes out and it is somewhat of a hybrid of the fairly stable, buisness oriented, WinNT and the monster gaming os that is Win98SE. And from what i have seen in my year and a half using it. It is pretty stable and is good with networking and pretty good with gaming. That brings us to XP it is a continuationm of the hybrid but differentiates itself from 2k in that it is a little more stable and will run older apps better than 2k and is also a little more stable when running graphic intense games. So to make this long history a little longer for you upgrade to one of them. Most of the people I know who use their computer for entertainment use XP only because I think it will handle the load of games better than 2k. I have had a couple of issues while playing games at work(shhh!! don't tell) and have had relatively few problems with XP at home. edit: after reading the posts above about the driver problems. If I were you i would check the net and make sure there are no XP issues with your new hardware. My copy came on a new system where all the hardware had been tested with XP and was certified to work. Nope, pretty much on the money. Except that basically, Win2k is really just NT5 ..XP would be better described as WinME + Win2k = WinXP Mac, you might be able to find 2k around, but it's not as easy as it used to be. MS is pressuring their "partners" to clear 2k off the shelf in favor of XP..
