    I remember that either Discovery Channel or National Geographic did a tv movie about such a scenario called SuperVolcano.

    It's true but it just wont explode overnight, the signs of an imminent explosion would be obvious.

    Yellowstone lies on a coldara. There was a supervolcano that blew up millions of years ago on Yellowstone, the explosion being so powerful it literally ripped the volcano apart. (hence Yellowstone being a large basin)

    If Yellowstone were to erupt again, you would start to see a reformation of the volcanic structure. It wont just turn into mount saint helens but you would be able to see modest rises in the ground as a whole consistent with the coldara.

    And if it exploded, humanity and most life on Earth are toast.
