I guess the thread title says it all.

I'm leaving Houston to start the graduate program in history at Texas A&M. This may be the death knell of my 3AM Kroger's shopping and after-hours bar hopping, but is there anything else I should be concerned about, or educated about, or anticipating with glee? I know people on this board have lived there, or currently live there.

I'm 31 yrs. old, and I really don't want to spend my time surrounded by 21 yr. olds, but it may be too late for that. I'll be grading their papers pretty soon.

P.S. I have a girlfriend who will be moving in with me eventually - so if you're going to suggest good places to hunt for lovin', please put it in secret code.
    ;)

Welcome to CS. I'm a 31 yr old grad student about to graduate in December. I can't wait to leave, not to discourage you or anything.

You can still do your grocery shopping at 3am.

To keep your sanity check out some of the clubs on campus. Some cool ones I've participated in are the car club, motorcycle club, and the sailing club. They're primarily composed of young students, but there are a lot of older people there as well. There's a list somewhere on TAMU's website. Also TAMU outdoors has some events every now and then to get you out of town.

Yes, as Mack said, you can still go to Kroger at 3am.

    Let's see..

The traffic is FREAKING HORRIBLE. Yeah, yeah, I know, Houston has much more traffic, but the problem is that College Station is too small for the amount of people driving in it, there is pretty much no public transportation, and no cabs, so everyone drives, there is always construction on the busiest streets, so in short, it's a giant mess. It's like being in a driving video game where obstacles are constantly being thrown at you.

There's really only one movie theater now, not counting the ones they show on the A&M campus, but I hear they are building a second one up in Bryan. There is also community theatre, and the OPAS productions at A&M. I've got to finish getting my son ready for school now, so I gotta close this, but feel free to ask me anything about CS, I've been here for 23 years now, so I know things pretty well. Couldn't help you on the "bar hopping" though, I've done my best to avoid bars. ;)

That depends on how you define "conservative."

College Station is a great town, I just left a few years ago to come back to Houston for the job market... The cost of living is really low in College Station and they have most of the great things a big city has to offer at College Station.. As for shopping at 3am you can always go to the Walmart in Bryan. Food is never a problem in College Station, Friday nights everyone and thier dog goes out to eat with thier free money "Aggie Bucks".. I liked the Tap for a good place to hangout with the friends and kill a few beers, and thier burgers are GREAT!!! If you want to checkout the Rockets games, Fox and Hound has all the big games on TV and some of the regular games too... The shopping in C/S isnt that great (if that matters to you or the woman) the mall is kinda small and there are not that many great local stores, but overall it gets the job done..

Congrats on the Grad program hope you have a good time at A&M

    GIG'EM

Oh yeah get a Wells Fargo account if you dont have one already.. Wells Fargo and C/S go hand in hand.. you see what I'm talking about when you get there..

I miss 2 things about College Station...

    1) Mi Cocina restaurant on George Bush Dr. (I'm about 75% sure that's the street)

    2) A place in the mall food court where you can get fruit drinks (kind of like smoothie king). Those were the best I ever had.

I've thought about driving back one weekend and staying a night just so I can enjoy those places again! It's been too long!

    Honorable mention...

    Cheddars

Enjoy your time there, and good luck to you.

It won't be all that bad, I went to college for the full 4 years and enjoyed most of my time there.

Racial slurs, hardly, I never had an incident my entire time living there. People then to overstate things. You will get a bit of cabin fever because once you've been to all the places around, there isn't anything else.

You can do what I did and just drink a lot :p

Two Aggie football players arrested on alcohol charges
    By Press Release
    Published: Monday, March 22, 2004

Two Texas A&M football players were charged with driving while intoxicated and public intoxication after shouting racial slurs at passengers at a Whataburger on Rock Prairie Road March 15, according to a press release.

Geoff Hangartner, a junior starting at center, was arrested after failing a field sobriety test, and his passenger, Cole Smith, a sophomore on the offensive line, was ticketed for public intoxication.

Police were called to the fast food restaurant at about 1 a.m. where employees said two white males in the drive-thru were shouting racial slurs at blacks in a car in front of the SUV they were driving, according to the Bryan-College Station Eagle.

Witnesses said one of the men got out of the SUV and yelled at the driver of the car.

Lt. Mark Langwell, public information officer for the College Station Police Department, said it was not clear which football player got out of the car.

Police followed the car to a home on Normand Street where Hangartner was arrested.

Nine members of the A&M football team have been arrested since the fall semester started.

Like isolated incidents don't happen everywhere!

Like Grendal said, I have NEVER had any problem/seen any problem with racism here, and I have lived here 3 years.

Agreed, that the same a**holes that did this at Whataburger are found just about anywhere. But, I sure as hell am not going to pass up another chance to mock aggy.

For what it's worth, I've been to dozens of parties in B/CS as well as several football games. Aggy is good people for the most part, and treats minorities like myself equally. Hell, I've even messed around with a few white chicks I met there, and ended up dating one of them.
