Long story short; my brother is getting married June 21st. I am the best man; 3 other guys will be there with me. My brother registered with Men's Warehouse and I had to get fitted today. My cousin got married about 3-4 yrs ago......I was his best man and that rental was only 60.00 with shoes and everything. Well I go in to get fitted, I get measured, and go to the front to see what I owe. The guy says with tax......196.00. 196.00?!?! I am only gonna wear this suit for a couple hours; I even have to return it that night! I will never see this suit again! I must have had this strange look on my face because he knocked off 20.00 because I agreed to become a "member" which was free and claimed that he knocked off another 20 or else it would have been over 200. Anyway, its gonna be here in two weeks. I only paid the 20.00 down payment because I wanted to be sure that I wasn't getting totally screwed.

My question is, am I totally out of the loop here or is this the going rate for tuxedo rentals? Or is Men's Warehouse really that high?

Well did you look at the brand name suit you rented. It really all depends on what you got ex. name brand, how many pieces there is to the outfit, 2 or 3 button jacket, all that kind of stuff goes into what it actually comes out to be.

Of all the tuxes I've had to rent, I've probably averaged $140 each time for various weddings. The most expensive was a full tails, somewhat name brand tux that was around $175.

That seems pretty expensive, but its probably some name brand.

What really sucks for most rentals is you can usually buy one for $400-600 that is custom fitted and looks better.

I actually bought a tux because my wife's work requires us to attend lots of charity galas that are usually black tie. Wearing it three times has paid for it, so the other 10 times I've worn it I've come out ahead.

Seems about right. I've been in two weddings recently and I think the rentals ran from 125-175, so you are not that far off.

Tux rentals are a rip off. I bought a standard Tux my freshman year of college for like $500 or so. In the 8 years since then, I've worn it about a dozen times. It a good investment if you think you'll go to a lot of formal events. Unfortunately, when you are in a wedding and have to get a specific Tux, there is not much you can do.

Two big money makers are tuxedo rentals and college book stores.

I wouldn't be too upset with Men's Wearhouse, because it really depends on the type of tuxes that were picked for the wedding party. When I registered I made sure to pick out a tux that wasn't very expensive for my groomsmen cause I didn't want them to have to pay too much; then since I qualified for a free tux, I got a more expensive one for myself. But their tuxes were around 100 I think.

And Men's Wearhouse is much better than Al's.

I went to MW and they were really expensive. I couldn't justify telling my guys they had to fork over $200 to be in my wedding. Or that they had to join some weird membership club to get it for cheaper.

I ended up going to Al's and getting the same brand for about $60 less. A couple of my guys already had tuxes, so I told them they could just rent the vest and tie. Also, Al's has a way to submit and pay for your order online, which really helped for the guys coming from out of town. And Al's service was really good. The lady would call me every few days telling me who has and hasn't come in for a fitting.

    Al's >>> Men Wearhouse IMO.
