US to play friendlly at Azteca

CHICAGO (AFP) - The United States will try to win for the first time on Mexican soil when the North American rivals meet September 9 in a friendly at Mexico City, the US Soccer Federation said on Wednesday.

The first US friendly in Mexico since 1984 follows a 2-1 US triumph at the Gold Cup final here in June and a 2-0 victory in a February friendly at Phoenix.

"The distinctive challenges of playing away against Mexico present another valuable opportunity to advance our program," US coach Bob Bradley said.

That's a polite way of noting the US men's record on Mexican soil is 0-22 with one drawn and overall the Mexicans own the rivalry 29-14 with 10 drawn, although the US squad is 8-0 with one drawn against Mexico since 2000.

The US squad, coming off three losses at Copa America, will return to the field on August 22 in a friendly at Sweden.

Probably not going to be a strong US squad for this one. Euro based players will be just starting their seasons and I can't see any club releasing them for a friendly. It should be a mostly MLS squad.
