From IGN: http://psp.ign.com/articles/683/683276p1.html Some images: A ~2 minute video: http://media.psp.ign.com/media/801/801059/vids_1.html Konami is also doing a "digital comic" (guess that's what this genre is called) for MGS; if the prices are right, I'd be pretty interested in these. The inclusion of the music alone almost sells me on the idea; the rest is just gravy. It would be interesting if other studios pick up on the idea; I'd love to see some behind-the-scenes stuff at Square-Enix, plus some selected music from the games.
UMDs are the disc format used by the PSP (Universal Media Disc). That's not the genre name though; I don't think it actually had a name, other than maybe "digital comic," which I mentioned earlier. The combination of me capitalizing on the poll results from that one thread together with some new video game news has led to me posting several more threads that I usually do...probably more in the last week than how many I usually post in a month. February might even be bigger…hopefully. I actually read something the other day about the next FF (not FFXII). I think it was just something about SE playing off of the "13" number for the game, and I think it mentioned which team would be working on the game. Nothing major, IIRC, but it was the first info on the next FF game.
It's just an extras DVD. I don't think packaging all the extras they put into a Special Edition DVD on a disc by itself really qualifies as a 'new genre'.
I was kind of going off what IGN/Konami said when I referred to it as a new genre. Still, it does sound like this and other things like it might offer quite a bit of interactivity, kind of like a game. I guess you can look at it as a extras disc to SH or something, which is actually something I'd like to see more of in the game industry. IIRC, God of War had a lot of stuff like that included on the disc, which I loved watching. It would just be interesting, IMO, if we got more stuff like that, especially if they offered things like digital comics and whatnot. And again, I'm such a sucker for some of the music in these games that the music selections alone make these UMDs seem very interesting to me.
Here's a video of the MGS:"Digital Comic" thing I was talking about: http://www.konami.jp/gs/kojima_pro/movie/gamersday_mgs_dc.asx Seems pretty cool to me. Just keep the price reasonable Konami.
My thoughts exactly...what the heck. They'll probably put in a cool interface where you walk and find easter eggs, but who can't do that on a website...
