    What's the difference?
Is it just the jacket length, or am I missing something?

How do you differentiate which occasions to wear a tux or suit?

I have prom coming up, and I personally don't see a point in buying a tux. I'm thinking that a suit with a vest would be perfectly acceptable. However, I'm not sure what the standard is or whatever...

Tuxedo is way more formal. Cuff links, extra buttons, pleated pants, extra designs and stripes/ lines. For prom I'd definitely rent the tux. You can get away with a suit for homecoming/winter formal.

Biggest difference to me with the jacket is the that the cut of the lapel. Also, the lapel has a kind of satin finish to it. There's also a satin stripe on the pants. Tux pants also don't have belt loops.

Then of course there's the pleated shirt with french cuffs (usually), bow tie, and cummerbund that complete the traditional tux outfit.

It's pretty easy to tell if someone's wearing a tux jacket/pants or a regular suit.

Hmm interesting. For some reason, I've been seeing a lot of people my age leave out the cummerbund all together...

You can wear a tux with a more traditional tie and a vest as well if you want.

You can switch out the cummerbund for a vest but you really should have one or the other if you ever plan on having your jacket unbuttoned.

Yup, that's what I was planning on doing. But see, that's my whole dilemma. If I wear a tux with a traditional vest and tie, aside from minor details I see no difference between it and a suit. I think it would look similar. But, I guess at this point I'm leaning towards the tux, just for traditions sake.

Tuxedos look ridiculous. But, since it's prom, you have to wear it. At my prom, I did a dressed-down tux. No cummerbund, no tie. I considered doing a Texas Tux, but didn't.
