Steve Francis: Why is he a PG

Francis wanted to play the point and thats one of the reasons he wouldn't play for the Grizz

 

I think it was more a issue of height than anything else. There are not too many teams that have a starting 2-guard under 6-4....A.I., David Wesley, and Jason Terry are the starting 2-guards under 6-4 that come to mind.

 

The problem is in the chategorizations of point guard, shooting guard, small forward, power forward and center. The traditional positions are becoming outdated quickly.

Is Allen Iverson a legitimate shooting guard? Was Michael Jordan for that matter? Is Stephon Marbury a true point guard? What is Kevin Garnett? What about Magic Johnson?

When players have versatility, you let them do what they can. Just because Steve is lined up at the "point guard" spot doesn't mean he will play John Stockton's role at the position.

 

So that means Steve won't be throwing elbows or playing dirty?

This is totally off topic, but anyone remember when Cassell and Stockton were going at it in the playoffs and Stockton literally fell down and pulled Cassell down on top of him and Sam got called for the foul? I never liked Stockton before, but that's when my dislike turned into hatred.... which turned me to the dark side.

 

Stevie wants to to be a "Floor General." He always has. He played SG in college only because after they recruited him did Maryland tell him he would be their SG. That situation is specifically why he warned Vancouver not to pick him since they already had Bibby at the PG. He didn't want to be a SG then and he doesn't want to, now, either! He's GREAT at it and I said so!

 

Francis is a PG because of his ability to drive and dish...

SG's have the ability to drive, but not necessarily the ability to dish...

FORGET THE LABELS: PG, SG, PF, whatever. Assemble the players on the floor so as to take advantage of their talents, offensively and defensively. And there are games within games...we go big, we play "small ball, depending on circumstances."

It's all about matchups and optimizing the available talent and personnel.

That said, this year should be a blast!!
