Spent yesterday afternoon skiing... I believe for the tenth time this year. I would consider myself an intermediate. I enjoy greens and blues, and I can make it down some blacks with difficulty and other blacks not at all. How many have been skiing and what level are you?
I want to take RM95's Girl to Angel Fire in February. That's the only place I've gone where I feel comfortable on the blues...I've even done a black or two, just not very well.
Going to Aspen in March.....I used to be pretty good, but haven't skied for like 3 years, not to mention I blew out my knee last year. So we'll see.....
I’m not as good as you might think. I grew up in the heart of the prairies and only moved to Calgary 10 years ago, so didn't grow up on the slopes. I don't downhill ski a huge amount here because the close places tend to be expensive and crowded. When I do go, if I rent 170s or 180s I can do black diamond runs, but not at break neck speed. If I rent longer boards, doing a black diamonds usually involves several stops to collect my scattered gear and/or extract myself from the trees.
I grew up downhill skiing and raced competitively for 6 years. I can ski pretty much anything -- black diamond, double black diamond, moguls, vertical drop, whatever. I haven't been on boards since 1996, though, so I'm majorly out of practice. Grizzled -- you must not be very tall (or heavy). My slalom skis are 198 in length; my GS skis are 208.
I’m 5’10”, but the length is more a reflection of my ability. I like to go a little shorter because it makes them easier to turn, of course. 208s!? Put me on those and I’d be a human missile. And you slalom on 198s? You must be a pretty good skier. Why’d you hang ‘em up? Hope you didn’t do a McGahee on a knee.
I did most of my skiing when I lived in Labrador. I had to give it up when I moved out to St. John's. I was never the greatest slalom skier; managed to get a silver medal at Marble Mountain once, and won a race in Baie Comeau, Quebec, but I think those were the only times I reached the podium for slalom. I was always more of a high speed specialist, and did well in the GS, Super G and Downhill events. I loved my 208s.
I think the fascination with colors and shapes is negatively correlated with the numbers of times someone gets to ride.
I grew up in Colorado and have been snow skiing since I was 4 years old. I have skiied almost everywhere in Colorado, but have yet to venture to NM or Utah. I have also skiied Lake Tahoe which is more looks than it is good skiing. Everyone has that one sport that they are good at. Skiing is that for me. Its just too bad that it is so far from Texas or I would go all of the time!!
I never have and never will go skiing in my lifetime. Anything that requires me to be outside in cold weather is a no-no. Thats why I live in Texas.
Huh? I've never lived in Denver. This is the 2nd time someone has mentioned that. I don't know where this idea came from. I've never even been to Denver. I was supposed to have a job interview there back in June, but the stupid recruiter fell through on me. Maybe I mentioned that in one of my annoying "I'm jobless, please pity me" posts?
I love skiing. I haven't been in about 2 years(long time for me), but I try to go every year. I recently tried on a pair of 210's that were just a sport shape. Not like skiing 210 shaped skiis, but fun. I actually learned how to do a helicopter on them. I like the big moguls, but my knees are starting to hate them. Is snowboarding easy on the knees? I'm getting to the point that I'd rather fool around on jumps than ski black and double black all day. Any advice?
What recruiter? So, if I wanted to move out of town, I should send my resume to a recruiter of that town?
I think the numbers show that snowboarding is safer on the knees (it seems as if one of my physical therapist/pro snowboarder friends mentioned this anyway). Mechanically, however, it seems as if there's a bonus to alpine/quick-release bindings. If my board gets stuck in a tree-well, my knee will blow out before the binding comes off. I didn't get stuck in any tree-wells btw, and my knees are still hurting from today, though. Jibbing is fun (for days like today, anyway).
No, this recruiter got my resume off of Monster.com But he was a total flake. He kept telling me that I was going to get an interview, than would never tell me when. I would call him every few days (long distance to Denver, mind you) and I always got the run-around. He would tell me things like "I just talked to them and they'll be ready to interview you soon." and "If any other recruiters call you, don't go to them... I'm going to get you a job." This BS lasted for 2 months. My phone bill went sky high and he never got me an interview. I finally stopped calling him because it became obvious that he was full of crap. Monster.com sucks.
Met some friends and took a few runs on 12/31. Decent snow this year, though there were a few thin spots. Since it was the holiday week, there were lots of shaky Texans sliding down the slopes. Should be in better shape and a lot less crowded in February. If you can spare a day, you should drive over to Enchanted Forest and try cross country. It's a nice place and it is easy to find a trail where there is not a soul around. A good change of pace after a few days in lift lines. They have lessons if you have not done the Nordic thing before. If you are going to be there on 2/23, you might want to consider this famous annual event at Enchanted Forest: http://www.enchantedforestxc.com/justdeserts2.html
Dude, that's harsh. Sincerely, That idiot Kennedy who was playing football while skiing and ran into a tree.
rimrocker, Thanks for the info. It looks like Angel Fire will be put off until next season so we can save up some money to go to New Zealand. Bummer, even though I get to go to New Zealand.
