Do you guys know of a school here in Houston that gets a teen ready for filmmaking and teaches the basics. My son is interested and gave me a brochure for me to send him to NY for a summer camp for young filmmakers. $6900!!! not including room and board.

there are not that many. I know there is the NYFA. But that is very expensive.

I know there are a few other, but that one seems like the most popular.

I am not sure about Houston, there are a few in NY and Los Angeles, that I have known students, teachers, or researched. The problem with any of them is that film is expensive.

There is a non-profit organization in Los Angeles called Echo Park Film Center. They do all kinds of things for teens and even younger. I think their programs are significantly less, but you would have to be in LA for the classes. I also believe that they mostly use 8mm film so it won't be the same, though for a beginner it will definitely be an ok place to start.

3 minutes of 8mm film to buy and develope will cost around $35. With that you would extremely lucky to get even close to 1 minute of usable footage.

That all depends on what you are shooting, but you can see how much it would cost even to make 15 minute film. Of course as the film grade goes up to 16mm and 35mm it will cost even more.

HOLY CR4P!!! I know this friend of minessss who said her daughter also asked to go there... (i said minesss) What, are the teachers encouraging this???

Is the brochure in BLACK and WHITE huge letters? I've seen it. :( Expensive, man.

There's another one in SEATTLE... I think it's called Seattle Institute of Film Something Something...

EDIT: Doesn't the ART INSTITUTE do something similar?
