This article got me thinking: how hard is it to get away with robbing a bank? I read years ago that 90% of bank robbers are caught because they couldn't keep their mouths shut about it. How would you go about it?

If I could get away with it, I wouldn't be here on this board posting. I'd be somewhere in Jamaica smoking a fat blunt and wiping my ass with bills.

i used to be a bank teller, never was robbed but a girl i trained with was robbed after like our first month.

another girl i went out with a couple of times opened a bank in the morning and she was robbed after she believed the guys had cased their procedures and they jumped out the bushes soon as she opened the door. i believe there was also an inept security guard in that instance.

The problem is whether or not it's worth it. Robbing a bank these days don't exactly get you enough money to retire. So if it's your expected source of income, you have to become a "professional" bank robber. And I'm not sure many people can pull that off without getting caught.

Banks rob us all the time - so it's only fair that some jilted criminal b*stard gets rich off of them.

We all should applaud their work.

As long as no-one gets hurt, then good luck to them.

Interesting thread. Having worked in a bank many years ago, I am convinced that I could get away with it. I was there when we were robbed and had a guy put a gun against my left temple. I quit a week later....

The key is to not go busting into the largest bank in town with guns blazing while wearing Presidents masks. That nonsense only works in the movies.

Go to a drive-thru which is separated from the main branch (preferably a few blocks away), hide in the bushes before they open, jump the girl after she opens the door, take all the money from the vault (not the drawers), calmly walk away to your car parked a block or two away, drive away as if nothing has happened.

The key is speed. If you can do all this in 10 minutes, you’re home free.

The problem is there are cameras everywhere now. Around the bank, in the bank, on streets, parking lots, other businesses, etc. It's hard to name a specific place which does not use security cameras anymore although I did find out a number of businesses use those fake security cameras with the blinking LED.

I doubt I could get away with robbing a bank, but I've always thought it would be cool to open a place kind of like a prison that someone has to try and break out of. Give them access to certain things, have "guards" walk by every once in a while, things like that. Of course, once they've done it once I doubt they'll want to do it again, and how long would it take them to do it? It's not like they could stay there overnight. I've always been a big fan of prison shows and movies (like Prison Break) and wondered if I could pull off something that took that much thinking.

Lil Pun... you've earned my respect, sir. I remember how much you asked about computer-related stuff... how things change. You're in touch and up-to-date with Technology now. Kudos to you, Kip.
Dude. What does that movie have to do with a bank robbery?!?!?!?

Just as a mental exercise, I asked myself this question years ago, and am fairly certain that, with the right supplies and equipment, such a heist could be pulled off *and* the case would be closed immediately, so no Tommy Lee Jones dude would spend his life chasing me down.. ;)

But Murphy's Law always seems to cause the most unexpected problems for plans like these.. LOL

I actually work at one right now and plot doing the same thing every day. But like someone else said there just isn't enough money in it.

Yes, just to be clear, can we all agree that like Nero says, everything in this thread (specifically my first post) is PURELY SPECULATION and nothing more than a mental exercise.

I can not emphasize this point enough.

There was a string of bank robberies for a whole year in my area all by the same person. Despite the cameras and photos, the guy wore a decent disguise and wasn't caught until after a few months after his last heist.

What everyone has said so far ties in together - it doesn't net much money doing it once, and the urge to brag might have helped get him caught. If he only did it once or twice the robber would have never been caught.

You know, we are sitting here, you and I, like a couple of regular fellas. You do what you do, and I do what I gotta do. And now that we've been face to face, if I'm there and I gotta put you away, I won't like it. But I tell you, if it's between you and some poor b*stard whose wife you're gonna turn into a widow, brother, you are going down.
