My son wants a Playstation Portable I'm thinking about getting it for him BUT I don't see a whole lot of games for it at the local stores and with the PS3 coming out . . I dunno If they will make games much longer after that QUESTION: Is it worth it? Esp IF more games may not be coming Rocket River Push over dad . . . Kid already has the D8ng Gum NINTENDO DS and it don't seem to have alot of games either
Are you serisou about the DS not having any games? It's got a TON of good games. If you're worried about the DS not having any games, there is no way the PSP is the answer. Its nice to look at, but I am not joking when I say that the software is quite lacking at this point. Just say no, or you'll be buying your kid a $250 paperweight.
nah, don't do it, its not worth it if you are getting it for just games. The DS has just as good games (for now), might as well get your moneys worth and try some new genres. however, if you son wants to use the PSP to watch movies (or movies you can download off the internet and watch in privacy, like in the bathroom behind a closed door with earphones on with no one to disturb you, then maybe its worth getting.
RR- It kinda depends on how old your son is. The DS is probably better for younger kids since it has more games right now. But the PSP has a ton of more capabilities like music and movies that older kids might want. Also, PSP has a ton of more 3rd party games like EA games, GTA, etc...
The PSP will have more games coming out, keep in mind that it's still early in it's lifespan. Also, I'm not sure if you're aware but the DS will play GameBoy Advance games which makes it's library much larger than it appears.
I would get the Nintendo SP first....cheaper...TONS of games, and great for kids. No need for the DS.... DD
And yet, GTA:LCS (not really a port), Madden, and NFS are some of the best sellers for the PSP. I never really got the big deal about ports. Some people look at the PSP being able to handle "current-gen" games on the go as a plus while others tend to look at it as a minus I guess. I like the idea of a "portable PS2" personally. Anyway, back to the question, it does kind of depend on how old your kid is and what he/she is into. I'd heavily lean towards just getting some more DS games, but that's not to say there aren't any good PSP games (especially in the next few months). It just so happens that some of the best PSP games (GTA:LCS, SOCOM, Madden, etc.) just aren't quite geared towards kids. Getting some GBA games sounds like a good idea as well. Oh, and I'm sure they'll be making games for the PSP long after the PS3 is out. Heck, there might still be quite a few PS2 titles released after the PS3 is out.
Do you really want to be playing Madden 30 and GTA 15? Have you ever played the PSP Madden? It has like half the features of Madden on the PS2, it's incredibly slow (HORRIBLY actually). DO you know why people hate ports? Because they are unoriginal bad copies. A bad port is like a fake Rolex, only in this case, you wind up paying the same price as a real Rolex.
Thanks My son is only 7 He just wants the latest greatest I didn't think it was a good Idea Will the DS play the SP Games? I know it plays the Advance games Rocket River
The PSP is well worth it. I dont' see why sony and publishers would stop making games after the PS3 is released. With the rumors of an online download service available this year I'd bet things only get sweeter. I got one for xmas and haven't touched my xbox since. This thing is amazing and makes the DS look silly. The only thing is the games are pricey $49.99 usually and the unit itself isn't cheap (249). Im sure Sony is going to integrate the psp into the ps3 somehow?
My fault, but lets keep the PSP/DS stuff in the other thread and keep this thread from going too far OT. I got a bit carried away earlier. To me, wanting it because it is the "latest greatest" is a bad reason to get one. If he was older and liked something like Madden (or GTA if he was old enough ), or he liked some of the other features (music, movies, homebrew, Location Free TV, etc.), then maybe the PSP could be considered. But not because it is the latest and greatest. SP games are the same as Advance games. The Game Boy Advance got redesigned to the GB(A) SP, thus the name SP. So yeah, they'll play the same games AFAIK. The online download service is more than just a rumor, AFAIK. Sony Connect should start allowing for PSP-specific downloads in March IIRC (games, movies, TV shows, music, etc.). And it does appear as though the PS3 and PSP will have some sort of integration. One rumor is that the PS3 will act as a Location Free base station (or whatever you call them), allowing you to watch TV on your PSP while you're away from home. No telling what else they have planned.
Yeah, but some people still love those games and if they wanted to play them, at least they would be able to, sucky or not. Like I said, it probably all depends on the age of the person playing. Older players will find more "violent" games on PSP and could probably find more use for the music, movies, and online capabilities. The PSP is a lot more customizable as well when compared to DS. But since the RR's kid is 7, he probable won't get the full use of the PSP.
Of course they won't Sure Sony is in the video game industry, but the PSP can lead the handheld industry. It has the capabilities of doing it, and you know a company like Sony will be taking full advantage of that.
Yeah, if Sony can get ~10 years of life out of the PS1 and PS2, then they can easily get several more years of support for the PSP. I think the PSP might even be profitable for them right now, so they have no reason not too. I think the handheld industry moves a little faster than consoles, so the PSP might not be seeing support ~10 years down the line, but it should last for several more years for sure IMO. BTW, I posted this in another thread, but here's some of the games to look forward to in 2006 (which I'm assuming won't be completely different from 07): http://www.ga-forum.com/showthread.php?t=79037&highlight=PSP+2006
