Most wear no protective gear although some middel and High schools require their students to wear protective headgear. I had to coach PV one year and went to several clinics. A couple of years after I coached a kid that went to our school was practicing in the off-season. his pole broke and he landed on his head. He was in ICU for a week but ended up making a full recovery(he was restricted from any type of contact for a full year though).
Man Pole vaulting would scare the **** out of me, you are so high up in the air, one false move and u can be seriously hurt.
