RM95's Girl and I are heading down there today on her day off, since I haven't been down there in nearly eight years. What are some good places to grub? Anything except Oriental, por favor. Thanks.
Depends on if you want ON the island or off. Italian is DiBella's on Avenue P (right at 53rd and Broadway where the McDonalds is and then left on the one way road). Neat is Rainforest Cafe at 53rd and the Seawall (very cool scenery including a volcano that goes off at night). Seafood is Gaidos or Landry's on the Seawall or Willie G's on Harborside near the strand. There is a Mediterranean Cafe on the Strand. Yagas on the Strand is pretty good for general burgers and sandwiches. If you want steak, I would recommend Perry's Steakhouse in Clear Lake on Bay Area Blvd. For mexican, there is this little place in Clear Lake that blows everything on the island away.
If you go to Rainforest, join their club. It costs $10.00 and you get a free appetizer, and $10.00 in gift certificates which will be mailed to you. I believe on subsequent visits you always get a free appetizer or 10% off your meal. In addition, you get priority seating. The certificates are good at all Landry's restaurants (they own Rainforest).
More info, por favor. As far as Perry's, not sure RM95's Girl is welcome back there. She was let go when she told Perry to **** off (we're so alike!) after he threw a baked potato at her and hit her in the head.
Gaido's has another restaurant on the Seawall, Casey's, I think, that's next door (literally). The food comes out of the same kitchens and is terrific, but cheaper. Pier 19 was great and cheap, but that azz, Ferttita (sp?) bought it and turned it into another god-awful Joe's Crab Shack. I absolutely hate tha guy.
man, that's so freaking funny! my favorite place is a little hole in the wall kinda place on the seawall, towards the east side of the island called Benno's. spicier than traditional gulf seafood (like the Gaido's model)...more of a cajun taste. everytime i'm in galveston i make it a point to eat there.
Galveston has some great restaurants if you know where to look. There are plenty of places that the tourists don't know about The best seafood in Galveston is at Clary's. It's on the West side near the Galveston County Daily News. Take the Harborside/Teichman Road exit, but turn right onto Teichman instead of left onto harborside....best ambience in Galveston For some great Mexican Food, try the Original Mexican Cafe at the corner of 14th and Market. For Greek Food, check out Mikono's in downtown...4025 Avenue S. It's somewhere around the courthouse, I think...
If you'd like some pretty good seafood, check out The Reef in Texas City. They've got all-you-can-eat shrimp. If you want to stop in League City, check out Estebans (tex-mex) on 518 east of 45. If you want to drop by Kemah and want good grilled food, check out T-Bone Toms on 146. Their pork chops and grilled chicken are fantastic. If you want great burgers, over the Kemah bridge from T-Bone Toms is Tookies. Chili cheeseburger........ooooooohhhhhh la la.
And if you do want to eat at Estaban's, let me know. We eat there almost once a week. I love that place! Also in League City is a new place called Feaster's Grill and Seafood. A good menu, generous portions, and good service.
Mosquito Cafe is an awesome little Bistro that's HIGHLY rated for food in Zagat's. It's also fairly big with Galveston's large gay community, so you know the food and service is good. It's a hip place, and I definitely recommend it. For steak, I'd go to Rudy and Paco's for the churrascos. Too bad you don't want Asian.....there's a really cool new sushi bar called Sky Bar on Post Office. Good sushi, excellent wine list, and a cool atmosphere. It might be cool to pop in there for a cocktail and some tempura (everybody likes tempura). I'd go to Luigi's for Italian....even though it's on the Strand, it's not a tourist trap. Really good Italian in a nice atmosphere. For breakfast or dessert, I'd go to the Phoenix. I can't remember what street it's on, but it's just a short walk (like about a hundred yards) from the Strand. For Seafood, I'd go to Saltwater grill and have the bouillabaisse. Equally good, but more touristy is Willie G's. Whatever you do, plan to spend at least a little bit of time walking up and down Postoffice street. It's a hip street that's starting to pick up some steam. It has a way to go yet, but it's not near as touristy as the Strand, and there are some neat little coffee shops, art galleries, and restaurants (as well as an awesome antique shop) along the way.
Great advice! I was trying to remember the name of the Saltwater Grill. Thanks. It's a small place that is just terrific. That area is filling with galleries and cool shops, so there is plenty to do there if you like the arts (or anything else!) Good call.
THAT'S it! I was trying to think of the name of that place, but couldn't remember. I ate there one afternoon when I had jury duty. Great burgers, also...
Behad...have you ever tried San Lorenzo across from Randalls on 2094? They've got pretty good tex-mex. Melys across the street is also pretty good. I think Estebans is still better, though.
Another thing.....don't let the shooting several years back deter you. It is SO much fun to go the Momus parade for Mardi Gras (this Saturday night). You'll definitely get some throws, and you'll definitely see some boobies.
