My main PC has died on me again. It says the \Windows\System32\Config\System file is missing or corrupt. I think this has happened before, I'm not positive though. I'm hoping that my windows CD will fix this. The only problem is I lent my CD to a friend so I'm having to wait for them to bring it back to me tomorow. Anyone have any idea about this kind of error? I have no idea how it happened. I haven't installed/downloaded etc. anything in the last few weeks. But last night it suddenly froze on me and so I turne dit off and went to bed. Then I tried to turn it on today and it was frozen. It won't boot up now at all.
Happened to my old computer, and no matter how many times i reinstalled windows it would come back up eventually. Just install linux and call it a day.
A repair installation should fix this problem or at worst a dirty installation. If you can get your hands on a cd-based OS like BART use that because those generally have tools like checkdisk that can fix core windows files. I'm confused as to why this would happen again after you reinstalled windows. Unless you weren't reinstalling it properly.
Man, I'd love to make it down. But Gas money ain't so high right now for me, that and 2 exams on mon, 1 on tues. What IM do you use/what is your signon name? Man, I've been doing so many things trying to get this to work. It's such a pain in the ass to keep having to load all 6 of the floppy disks everytime to try to see if it's fixed. It started off with my windows not loading because of of "Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM" and then I typed a number of lines of code copying over the repair files from here http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;307545 I got through part one, but it wouldn't boot up for me to do part 2. It said the SHLWAPI.dll was corrupt. So I found a forum where someone had the same problem, and I went to a website and downloaded the shwalpi.dll file and copied it over to my other pc replacing the old one, maybe I shouldn't have. Well, it finally got farther in the boot up now with the shlwapi.dll change, it now shows the window's logo screen (showing it booting up) and then comes uip with other errors. : color HLSToRGB dynamic link not valid SHLwapi.dll NTDsapi.dll not valid win image MSACM32.dll not valid win image Not sure what to do.
i dont get it did R2K's post just magically disappear ? or is uprising posted what he wants to post. either way i call shananegans on this whole scheme!
Just try booting from your windows cd and doing a repair install. That does the trick 95% of the time. Dont try manually changing or fixing files because that's almost impossible to do.
That's what I've been trying to do. I had to go into the cmd prompt after booting up with Boot Diskets, and type like 10 lines of code from http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;307545 (part 1) Still nothing.
I was referring to a repair install off of your windows xp cd. Pop in your XP cd and boot up off of it and try running the windows repair installation. To do that hit enter (should say hit enter to start windows xp install). DO NOT hit r for the recovery console Once you do that, hit f8 for the liscensing agreement. Then you should have an option to repair windows. (you should be able to hit r) If you dont get a repair option that means that the cd you are using and the version of windows xp you have may not be compatible with each other. In that case, you can try a dirty install if you're desperate.

thanks gee. I'm doing that now. It has failed to copy 2 files, but I pressed esc to skip them, hoping it will finish. It wasn't able to do driver.cab or mlang.dat, but I'm not worried. Thanks for the info man!
Try checking if the hard drive still works. Rip out the hard drive, make it a slave drive, and then put it in another computer (with an updated virus scanner). Run a virus scan, and then start archiving and burning. You might have been infected by a worm or virus. If you use the same scanner brand for both computers, get a trial version from another product. I'd format and reinstall when you get that CD back.
How are you posting without your PC? On this good PC, or any other good PC of the same version, copy the entire directory that the message claims is corrupt onto a CD also copy the DOS command XCOPY. Go to the damaged PC, paste the good SYSTEM files there with XCOPY. OR If you want to salvage what's on the hard drive, install BARE-BONES LINUX (FREE download) or WINDOWS (from the restore CD) on a different directory (call it c:\WINDERS or C:\GOOD_WINDOWS\ to avoid confusion) and you will be able to see your files, take them out with a burner or such, and then use your PC again.
Thanks for yalls help! Repairing wouldn't work, it always came up with some problems. I tried to fix it in restore, but after fixing one problem another would come up. I decided to just reinstall into a differnet directory. Thanks for all your help. It's up and running now.
