I was wondering which is best to use - your host's or ISP's smtp server... is there a big difference?
Unless you have your own domain, more than likely you're going to use your ISP's outgoing mail server. common ones: smtp.sbcglobal.yahoo.com smtp-server.houston.rr.com (substitute Houston for your local RR provider)
You should go with the ISP's smtp server. More and more, we are seeing ISP's blocking 3rd party smtp servers to combat abuse. If you really want to use your own, you can usually get your ISP to remove the port 25 block.
Yeah, I do have my own domain and it has outgoing mail available. I was wondering whether there is any real advantage/disadvantage in doing this. I guess this really does depend on the host - but what's the usual situation? Are ISPs generally better prepared against abuse? I guess also when people track where the email came from it might be more useful to have the domain rather than isp perhaps? thanks.
Even if you have your own domain I would use your ISPs. Your ISP probably has a limit to mail sent out anyway (TimeWarner and SBC have 500 a day max) but i is probably a little faster and they usually have better spam guards.
