One of my favorite people at UT has passed away...

Dean J. Michael Quinn, formerly of the University of Texas at Austin, College of Communication, died after a long illness.

JM Quinn was a Dean of Student Affairs when I worked there and he was just an all around great guy. He was very intelligent, having both a Journalism degree and a law degree, but he always seemed like just an ol' cowboy when you talked to him.

From an article on his retirement from UT in 2003:

Quinn’s career has been long and distinguished. Prior to joining the faculty, he worked for The Dallas Morning News in their Washington, D.C. bureau, and briefly as press officer to House Speaker Ben Barnes. Since 1966 he has taught reporting, public affairs reporting, and communication law and ethics. He holds the George Christian Centennial Professorship in Communication, and he was chair of the Department of Journalism in 1983-84. He served as acting chair of the Department of Advertising in 1987 as well. Since 1980, Dean Quinn has been assistant and now associate dean of the College of Communication.

His philosophy is to “take care of the little people.” It’s a motto he borrowed from a close friend, and he says it has proven to be good words to live by.

He always sincerely listened to everybody's input, even the lowest guy on the totem pole (which at the time was me.)

Quinn was a heck of a nice man and he will be missed.
