I'm just throwing this out there. My buddy from the northeast has been telling me about Lobster rolls that he had in Maine, and I've been dying to try one. I just have no idea if anyone makes them in Houston. BTW, here is the way you make a lobster roll: 1 Lb. of lobster meat, 1/2 cup of finely diced celery Juice of 1/2 of a lemon 1/2 cup of mayonnaise 1/2 teaspoon of pepper ( white ) Black works if your out of white) Toasted hot dog buns Also, for those of you who have never had an authentic philly cheesesteak, go to Jake's on Chimney Rock near Westheimer. Be sure to order it with cheez whiz and peppers. Damn good stuff. Anyone else found some regional foods that you can get in H-Town?
So, it's basically tuna salad made with lobster? Down here where lobster is probably twice as expensive as it is in New England, that sounds like a waste of good lobster meat. I love Indian food, but I can't find anybody to eat it with me. My friends hated it the first time they tried it, and I'm pretty sure my wife only says she likes it so she doesn't hurt my feelings.
It cracks me up when Asian (the Southeast variety) eat stuff like squid, duck blood, kim chee, etc. but run from Indian food.
why is indian food so expensive? come on....do they really need to charge $3 for some white rice? take a page from the asians and give that stuff with your entree.
I think it might be a cultural thing where they consider the dish to be the meal so it's not included in the price. Of course, how are you supposed to eat it without rice or bread? If you're going to eat cheap Indian food, have a toilet nearby.
For Indian food I really only eat at Bombay Brasserie. I used to go there and Bombap Palace but someoen bought it and changed the name to Kiran's and it is just nto even close to being as good.
Word, there is this Vegetarian place called something like Sri Balagi on Hilcroft in the Indian part of 59. Oh, I am Indian by the way. Man the 4 dollar stuff is good but talk about diarrhea city afterwards. My wife won't even let me get anything except for samosas from there anymore because of what ti does to my ability to drop a deuce.
There isn't anything about indian foods that really stand out except maybe the curries but in my opinion the thai/vietnamese curries are better.
Don't know about odd places to eat, but here are my favorites by cuisine: Vietnamese: Pho Vang II on 290 and Hollister or Vietnam in the heights area Chinese: Fu's Garden in the Rice Village or Yao's place (they stole the chef from Fu's on Richomnd/610...the best spot in town) or Kam's on Montrose/Richmond Cheap, but still quality sushi: Oishii on Richmond/Timmons Expensive sushi: Kubo's in Rice Village Burgers: Otto's on woodway (or is it memorial?) or Goode Co. Taqueria on Kirby Authentic Mexican: Taqueria El Rey on Shepherd (best tortilla soup in america). suprisingly, 100% Taquito on 59/Buffalo Speedway is great as well Tex-Mex: pick your own...too many to recommend BBQ: Goode Company BBQ on Kirby or Luling City Market on Richmond/610 Pizza: Star Pizza on Shepherd or Fuzzy's Pizza on Memorial or in Rice Village Cuban food: El Meson in Rice Village (also have Tex-Mex...best cheese enchilada's in town)
The best thai food in town in my opinion is Thai Gourmet on Richmond. I used to think Kanomwan was the best, but as the years go Thai Gourmet just keeps distancing itself. I highly reccomend the Royal Seafood, but I usually subsitute chicken instead of seafood.
My favorite is this Indian curry with lumps of yogurt and mushrooms. It might be the Tika Masalla. Instead of rice, eat it with naan.
