U.S. President Barack Obama will start regularly tweeting from his official Twitter account.

In an update today, it was announced that the President’s reelection staff would be managing his social media presence and accounts on Facebook and Twitter.

A rep also revealed that the Commander In Chief would be penning tweets of his own and that “on Twitter, tweets from the President will be signed ‘-BO.’”

The @BarackObama account has been active since 2007, when Obama was using social media in his campaign for the presidency.

However, as the account began accumulating updates in 2009, we discovered that the President’s staff, not the President himself, was actually posting the tweets.

In a visit to Shanghai, Obama told a group of Chinese students, “I have never used Twitter. My thumbs are too clumsy to type in things on the phone.” In fact, the President did not himself send a tweet until the beginning of 2010, when he pushed the button in support of the @RedCross account.

With Republican candidates’ early use of social media in the 2012 race, Obama’s staffers are strengthening an already robust social media program for the President’s campaign. In all likelihood, personal tweets from “-B.O.” himself will do a lot to drum up enthusiasm (not to mention retweets) from supporters.

Just thought this was interesting. I never understood twitter and still dont. It just seems like a way for famous people to get them selves in trouble by saying something dumb or accidentally tweeting something bad. But I'm sure Obama must have someone to proof his tweets since everything he says will be scrutinized.

Its facebook status updates with a few extra bells and whistles. Its ok to keep up with someone of importance, but its really dumb when the average joe (or should i say jane) feels the need to update their twitter every 5 minutes.

Maybe because that isnt all it is?

I dont follow many *actual* people. Id say 90% of the accounts I "follow" (or read) are news services and other writers who post links to their newest articles.
I dont have to remember to go to one website or the other to read news I want to read, I jsut click the link from my twitter page.

Sure, there are tons of people who use it only to follow their talkative friends or celebs they like, but that is by no means the only use for it.

I specifically agree that it will be vetted to the point of meaninglessness, especially since modern politicians are already idealess people-pleasers. I would probably rather read his tweets or a weekly op-ed column post presidency, after the security clearance and decision making experience has given him a perspective worth listening to. Maybe if LBJ had Twitter he wouldn't have gone all Mickey Mantle/Howard Hughes-y after he left.
