I knew that they looked like a TV remote, but I didn't realize how they were used. Pretty cool demo: http://www.wimp.com/controller/
Very cool, but not many developers will work on exclusive stuff for them with such a different control scheme. It is a big risk for them, but if they pull it off,.....wow ! DD
I think it's cool but... what about the fat, unathletic, uncoordinated or just lazy people that play video games?
You could do smaller gestures once you get used to the game's quirks. They won't force large gestures because people will get tired. Nintendo will have to bring out a lot of games to keep its fans busy. I don't think 3rd parties will bring out half the great material of Nintendo's divisions.
I dunno. Hopefully it will be a major breakthrough since I'll probably get my son a Wii for Christmas. If/when the price of the PS3 drops by a couple hundred bucks I might get one of them too. Sony has probably lost me (actually my son) as a customer to Nintendo.
Of course 3rd party won't put much out? Why would they? You can get 3 skus out, X-box 360, PS3, and PC with practically the same controls, this would require a ground up redesign on a lot of controls and cost and test would be enormous. It is cool, but Nintendo better have a standard controller too, or they are really shrinking their games base. DD
I haven't played much video games in a while, last system I played much was Nintendo 64. But this might get me back into it. That sword fighting game and Zelda look pretty cool.
If you notice in the video, turning the Wii controllers horizontally makes it a normal standard controller. It's also supposed to have built in speaker along with other things btw.
The have a remote rack to play it like a controller. The Wii can also use the Gamecube controller with the misplaced buttons... What I meant before was because costs to develop for the Wii can be cheap, I hope the 3rd party dump of games won't be cheapened with Xbox-looking graphics plus one or two gimicky hand motions. The potential is definitely there, but because graphics isn't the standard, some developers won't know where to start. That and I also think Wii games will be burned fairly quickly.
The games look like crap for next generation. but the controlers could make some of the games really fun like the FPS and the sword games.
It does look like fun but I think the novelty of waving it around like a sword or gun will wear off quickly.
Seriously looks cool. Hmm, Smash Brothers would be very frantic to play, especially with friends next to you.
DD, The thing is that most of the good nintendo games, at least according to my nephews, are written by nintendo anyways. I don't think nintendo is going to have a problem.
The controllers have an arcade feel to them. Arcades usually sacrifice long-term gameplay for intense bursts that help burn quarters. Nintendo has said that they're trying to reach new gamers, and they've also said that games have become too complicated and some tasks have become like chores. I'm thinking games that use the controllers full potential will be more concept-like than a full fleshed game. Kind of like a Luigi's Mansion, or on the DS, Nintendogs and Brain Age. On the DS, there are long-sitting games like Metroid, but they don't use the dual screen as well and feel more traditional in approach. There's nothing wrong with that, but it doesn't seem like they've struck a balance on the DS, and that feeling to me could carry onto the Wii. Free online is a big reason that I could be wrong, but I don't think the controllers is the reason for Wii's online popularity.
