Ouch. Must have been gruesome. But it sure was dumb, especially after he was warned multiple times not to do it by the bus security guard.

The good times were rolling aboard the party bus to a Sweet 16 celebration — until tragedy struck for a Queens student who won’t see his 17th birthday.

Daniel Fernandez, a popular junior at St. Francis Prep, was killed in a gruesome accident Friday after poking his head out of an escape hatch as the double-decker ride passed beneath a New Jersey overpass.

“I can’t believe that you’re gone,” classmate Alyssa Argento wrote on a Facebook memorial page. “Just 5 minutes before this nightmare happened you were in the back of the bus dancing with me and all of your friends, having so much fun.”

The 16-year-old Fernandez was lionized Saturday by nearly 1,000 heartbroken friends, many of them classmates at the Queens school.

The handsome student was recalled as an upbeat kid with a quick smile and an easy manner.

“Dan lived his life to the fullest every day, and he is a perfect example on how we should live our lives,” wrote classmate Chelsea Brandimarte.

“He always had a smile on his face and always wanted to have fun. . . . Rest in peace Dan, we love you so much and will never ever forget you.”

Security guard Alex Franco, who worked for the bus company Designer Transportation, said he repeatedly warned the kids to stay away from the bus’ rooftop emergency exit.

The kids complained it was getting hot in the bus, and Franco said he went downstairs from the top deck to tell the driver.

“Everybody was dancing,” Franco told the Daily News. “Two minutes, five minutes I was downstairs. Then I heard two guys screaming, ‘Oh my God! Oh my God!’ ”

There suddenly was blood everywhere as the bus pulled off to the shoulder.

Fernandez was pronounced dead a short time later with severe head trauma at Hackensack Medical Center, leaving his friends — some splashed with blood after the accident — to mourn a life gone too soon.

“Dan, you will forever be in our hearts,” wrote Jaclyn LaForgia. “There will never be a day where I won’t think about you; we love you so much.”

The bus, which left about 5 p.m. from the school, was headed to the Sweet 16 party in Garfield, N.J., with 65 teens aboard.

The vehicle had just crossed the Hudson River about 6:45 p.m. when Fernandez hit the underside of the Fletcher Ave. overpass in Fort Lee, which has a clearance of 14 feet.

“This was a tragic accident, and all of our employees are taking this hard,” said Designer Transportation spokesman Kyle Kotary. “Our thoughts and prayers are first and foremost with the young man’s family and friends.”

There were no parental chaperones on the bus, according to Kotary.

Other guests already at the Venetian, a posh catering hall, learned of the tragedy via text.

Students at the Queens prep school planned to wear blue polo shirts in Fernandez’s honor for the first day of school Thursday.

“The St. Francis Prep community shares in the grief and shock of this young man's sudden death,” said a statement on the school website. “Our hearts and prayers are with Daniel Fernandez’s family and friends.”

A wake was set for Labor Day at Kearns Funeral Home in Whitehouse, N.J., with visiting hours from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

The bus was impounded and held in Newark by Port Authority police.

“He was an adorable, low-key kid, with a sweet smile,” said Jane Lynch, Fernandez’s English teacher. “Kids loved him. He had lots of friends, and was popular with the girls.”

A big rolleyes on the accuracy.... Did the reporter manage to snag an eye witness or something?

Maybe the writer wanted a big smash with the catchy opener. Always good to get ahead of the competition.
