Randy Shannon, according to a variety of rumors. According to a few sources, Randy was unofficially named the HC of Kentucky but actually brushed off some introduction when Mack Brown called him to come to Austin. Instead of flying to Kentucky, he flew to Austin... http://www.nationofblue.com/no-randy-shannon-4092/ http://www.nationofblue.com/did-texas-steal-randy-shannon-4103/
I'd be really satisfied if he does end up as the DC. I'm not really concerned with the DC right now though as much as I am with the OC.
He's a leading candidate now insomuch as he's the one available to talk. He'd be a great hire because of his solid X and O game and recruiting prowess. His name alone would help at this point. I'd say he's option 1A right now.

But he restored their image. As a citizen in the state of Texas, I assume you are excited that your flagship University has hired a guy of high moral character.
Yeah, as a HC. He has an absolutely stellar resume as a DC. The game of football is littered with brilliant coordinators who, for whatever reason, didn't succeed as head men.
Like Kubiak, he was a great coordinator, not much of a head coach. His total defense when he was a coordinator at the U 2001 - 6th 2002 - 7th 2003 - 2nd 2004 - 28th 2005 - 4th 2006 - 7thh
Honestly, that was just sort of a cop-out on my part. Meaning, that I think he's the best available, but he's not necessarily the only "best choice" for Texas. I've always thought it would be nice to give Jerry Gray a chance. He might be 1B for me.
This is a pretty interesting alternative negative take on Randy Shannon: http://barkingcarnival.fantake.com/2010/12/13/what-our-new-staff-should-look-like/ Basic summary is that he had a huge talent advantage with Florida athletes playing crappy ACC athletes which let a basic scheme do really well. He argues that wouldn't work nearly so well in a league with spread offenses with good athletes.
Lengthy, but great read about Shannon: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/football/ncaa/09/04/shannon0910/
Can you explain further? Or are you just trolling again? We would bring him here to coach the defense, not to be our head coach. He has a great track record when he is in charge of coaching defense. Other than your hatred of UT, what specifically makes you think they are settling? You might be in luck though, another name has come up a lot today: Teryl Austin, the DC at Florida. Texx, I can't wait to hear your opinion on how crappy this guy is too.
Latest rumors have Teryl Austin, the current UF (well, former since apparently Kirby Smart is being hired from Bama), as a very, very serious candidate. The DC job has been posted: http://utdirect.utexas.edu/pnjobs/pnjobsvw.WBX?job_nbr=10-12-13-01-0807 Apparently, the job spec looks like it was written for Austin -- he has 12 years college and 7 years NFL experience. This was his first year as Florida's DC, and they ranked 9th in total defense. He's also getting some love for the Pitt HC job (he's an alum).
