Profits for the first half of Nintendo’s financial year have risen by 34 percent, but the company's cutting its full-year profit forecast by 16 percent, citing the strong yen.

For the six months from April to September, Nintendo's revenues grew from ¥694.8 billion ($7.03bn) last year to ¥836.9 billion ($8.47bn) this year. Profits were up from ¥132.4 billion ($1.34bn) to ¥144.8 billion ($1.47bn).

Despite these positive results, the economic downturn and relative strength of the yen have forced the company to lower its net income forecast for the full year by 16 percent to ¥345 billion ($3.5bn). The company raised its full-year predictions in August, as a result of continued strong sales of the Wii and Nintendo DS.

At the same time, Nintendo raised its sales forecasts for the Wii, from 26.5 million units to a new expectation of 27.5 million for the financial year – greater than the current lifetime total for either the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3. Nintendo DS forecasts remained unchanged at 30.5 million units.

The Wii sold 10.1 million units over the last six months, for a lifetime total of 34.55 million. Software sales over the same period stood at 81.41 million units, for a lifetime-to-date total of 229.85 million.

Worldwide unit sales for the DS were 13.73 million over the last six months, for a lifetime-to-date total of 84.33 million. Worldwide software sales for the format stood at 85.02 million for the first half of the year, and 454.63 million lifetime-to-date.

Divided by region, sales in Japan stood at ¥869.6 billion ($8.80bn), compared to 361.9 billion ($3.67bn) in Europe and ¥331 billion ($3.35bn) in the Americas.

Sony’s second quarter financial results for the three months ending September 30th show a 70 percent drop in overall profits -- however, the company’s games division has actually seen a 10 percent increase in revenues over the previous year.

Net income for the group as a whole was down to just ¥20.8 billion ($200m). Revenues were down 0.5 percent to ¥2.07 trillion ($19.9bn). Such results were within expectations, though -- Sony warned earlier this week that the strength of the yen and the global economic downturn were having a severe effect on its business.

The news for Sony Computer Entertainment was also relatively good, with revenues up by 10.3 percent to ¥268.5 billion ($2.76bn). The games division still saw a ¥39.5 billion ($405m) loss -- albeit a far more moderate one compared to ¥96.7 billion ($992m) at the same time last year.

Increased sales of PlayStation 3 software were the driving force behind the improvements, as well as hardware cost reductions. 2.43 million PlayStation 3 consoles were sold worldwide over the three months, an increase of 1.12 million on the same period in 2007.

PSP hardware sales saw an increase of 0.60 million units to 3.18 million worldwide. PlayStation 2 sales though were predictably down, decreasing by 0.78 million units to a still impressive figure of 2.50 million.

In terms of software sales, though, a declining market for both the PS2 and PSP could not be offset by improvements on the PS3. PSP software sales fell by 0.8 million units to 11.8 million, with PS2 software sales down 14.9 million to 23.1 million.

PS3 software sales more than doubled compared to the previous year, up by 10.7 million units to 21.1 million. This figure was still less than the PS2 though, for which increasingly few new titles are now being released.

Microsoft announced revenues up 9 percent to $15.06 billion for the latest quarter, with the Xbox 360-producing Entertainment & Devices Devision seeing slightly decreased revenue year on year, thanks to poor comparisons with Halo 3's release last September.

Overall, the company's profits edged up to $4.3 billion for the quarter, but EDD, which also includes Zune, Games for Windows, and Mac application software, decreased 6 percent to $1.81 billion. Its profits edged up 7 percent to $178 million.

Microsoft's SEC filing noted that the division's revenue decreased primarily due to decreased Xbox platform and PC game revenue, partially offset by increases across other EDD product revenue.

It revealed that Xbox 360 platform and PC game revenue decreased $331 million or 22 percent, primarily as a result of the $330 million of incremental revenue from the launch of Halo 3 in the three months leading up to September 30th, 2007, as well as decreased revenue on Xbox 360 consoles as a result of price reductions during the prior 12 months.

The company said it shipped 2.2 million Xbox 360 consoles (at significantly lower prices, as recently shown by Gamasutra) during the first quarter of fiscal year 2009, compared with 1.8 million Xbox 360 consoles during the first quarter of fiscal year 2008.

Luckily, the division was offset by non-game revenue, since other EDD product revenue increased 51 percent to $216 million, led by increased sales of application software for Apple’s Macintosh computers, the Zune digital music and entertainment platform, and mobile and embedded device platforms.

A couple of interesting tidbits from the filing: according to the company, "the cost of revenue decreased $251 million or 21 percent, primarily driven by decreased Xbox 360 manufacturing costs," suggesting cheaper hardware.

In addition, the company predicted EDD (including Xbox 360 and the division's other elements) will see "sustained profitability for fiscal year 2009" which runs through June 2009.

[UPDATE: During an analyst call held following the results announcement, Microsoft CFO Chris Liddell was asked about whether the Xbox 360 had too much inventory in stores heading into Christmas, given the deteriorating financial situation.

In reply, he noted, "We're feeling good about the overall level of inventory," and explained that "the price points that we're looking at this Christmas [for Xbox 360 hardware] are very good," referencing recent price cuts to as low as $199 for the Xbox 360 Arcade version.

Liddell was reasonably bullish about Microsoft's prospects for the Xbox 360 this Christmas compared to previous holiday seasons, when it was significantly more expensive than market leaders such as the Wii, concluding, "When you look at the relative price points [compared] to the competition, it's nowhere near as significant as it was, say, last Christmas."]

with the handheld market it's no doubt the DS reigns supreme.. But what just baffles me is that the Wii is such a strong seller even till this day.. When was the last time you heard about a console always being sold out even after 2 years it's been out?

Nintendo Sales Up 17 Percent, Cuts Outlook On Strong Yen

Nintendo has seen sales rise by 17 percent in the nine months ended December 31st 2008 -- but the continuing strength of the yen against other major currencies has forced the company to cut its yearly profit expectations by a third.

To date, Nintendo's sold ‬96‭.2 ‬million DS consoles, including 1.66 million units of the DSi, with over 533 million software units sold. The currently Japanese-only Pokemon Platinum was identified as one of the biggest sellers of the period, at over 2 million units, alongside Kirby Super Star Ultra.

The Wii’s lifetime total now stands at 44.9 million, with over 312 million games sold. Of these Wii Fit and Mario Kart Wii have both now sold over 10 million units worldwide. Major winter titles Wii Music and Animal Crossing: City Folk were described as having "favorable receptions".

Revenues hit ¥1.54 trillion ($17.1bn) for the last nine months, with operating profit up 27 percent to ¥501.3 billion ($5.6bn). But the company's net profit fell 18 percent to ¥212.5 billion ($2.4bn).

Nintendo says the drop in profits is attributable to the general global economic downturn -- particularly the continuing strength of the yen. As a result, it lowered its full-year forecasts for a second time, reducing net income expectations by 33 percent to ¥230 billion ($2.6bn) -- less than its 2007 total of ¥257.3 billion ($2.9bn).

Full year sales estimates have been lowered by 9.0 percent to ¥1.82 trillion ($20.3bn). Operating profit predictions are down by 15.9 percent to ¥530 billion ($5.9bn) -- although both sales and operating profit figures still represent a rise year-on-year.

Sony Reports 32 Percent Sales Drop, Declining Hardware

Sony's game division saw a year-on-year sales decrease of 32.2 percent for the quarter ending December 31st, down from ¥581.2 billion ($6.43bn) in 2007 to ¥393.8 billion ($4.36bn), due to the strong yen and a decline in all of its video game unit sales.

Though the company primarily blamed its year-on-year 97 percent drop in operating income to ¥400 million (4.42 million) on unfavorable exchange rates against the U.S. dollar and Euro -- a similar challenge also snagged Nintendo -- it also acknowledged a decrease in worldwide hardware unit sales.

PlayStation 3 sales fell 440,000 units to 4.46 million systems sold during the quarter. The company's PlayStation Portable moved 680,000 fewer units year-over-year, and only sold 5.08 million during the October-December period. PlayStation 2 likewise saw its hardware numbers decrease by over 53 percent year-on-year, dropping by 2.88 million to only 2.52 million units sold.

Though worldwide software unit sales were up for the PlayStation 3 by 14.8 million units to 40.8 million sold during the quarter, negative numbers for the other two platforms brought overall software unit sales down.

The PlayStation 2 saw its software unit sales dramatically decreasing 51 percent compared to the same three-month period in the previous year, down by 31.2 million units to 29.7 million. The PlayStation Portable also suffered a decrease of 2.8 million units to 15.5 million.

Following losses in Sony's Game division and a planned restructuring for the overall company that will see 16,000 employees laid off in an effort to save $2.9 billion, it remains unclear whether the company will cut its PlayStation staff -- though widespread reports have suggested significant reductions there are unlikely.

"As long as we plan prudently, I think we will be fine," said SCE Europe president David Reeves in December. "We have a good business model. People will continue to buy the hardware, continue to buy the software. I'm convinced of it."

Microsoft To Cut 5,000 Jobs, Xbox 360 Division Revenues Up, Profits Down

Microsoft says it will lay off 5,000 workers over the next 18 months, nearly five percent of its total workforce, as the tech giant's total profits for the fourth quarter of 2008 declined to $4.17 billion from $4.71 billion in the same period last year.

The decline came in spite of a 2 percent increase in total revenues to $16.63 billion -- and, crediting the global economy, the company says it must take steps to manage costs.

The company's Entertainment and Devices Division, which contains its Xbox 360 and games businesses, saw $3.18 billion in revenue for the quarter, an increase of 3% over 2007's $3.07 billion. However, the division had less revenue in the second half of 2008 than it did in 2007 -- $4.99 billion versus $5.02 billion.

The company says that while Xbox 360 platform and PC game revenue drove the increase, it was offset by a decrease in revenue from the company's Zune music player. And while Xbox 360 platform and PC game revenue specifically was up 6 percent to $135 million, price reductions still offset the bottom line.

The five percent year-over-year revenue decline in the six-month comparison is because of the comparison to Halo 3's $330 million launch last year, the company adds.

Microsoft says it shipped 6 million Xbox 360 consoles during the quarter, compared to 4.3 million in the previous year. In all, 8.3 million Xbox 360 consoles were shipped in the last six months of 2008, versus 6.1 million consoles in the year previous.

Overall, "...in response to the realities of a deteriorating economy, we’re taking important steps to realign Microsoft’s business," CEO Steve Ballmer said in a company-wide memo.

According to Ballmer, the reductions will be made "in the areas of R&D, marketing, sales, finance, [legal], HR, and IT over the next 18 months" -- although 1,400 of the announced job cuts will be made tomorrow.

"The decision to eliminate jobs is a very difficult one," wrote Ballmer in his memo. "Our people are the foundation of everything we have achieved and we place the highest value on the commitment and hard work that you have dedicated to building this company."

"But we believe these job eliminations are crucial to our ability to adjust the company’s cost structure so that we have the resources to drive future profitable growth," he added.

Nintendo revealed that 26 of its first-party titles released for Nintendo DS and Wii exceeded at least one million copies sold worldwide since their release, and revealed its upcoming slate for the two consoles.

Pet simulation game Nintendogs, which has been released with five different versions for DS since first debuting in 2005, has so far sold 21.67 million copies globally.

Brain Age and Brain Age 2 moved 16.82 and 13.27 million units in their lifetime, while Pokemon Diamond and Pearl sold a total of 16.48 million. Pokemon Platinum, which has so far only been released in Japan and is coming stateside in March, has already seen 2.4 million copies sold.

The company shared its upcoming slate of releases for all territories, with a Western launch planned for its new Nintendo DSi model this "spring-summer". Released in Japan in November 2008, the updated handheld adds two built-in cameras, an SD card slot, and a download shop to the previous model.

The critically-acclaimed Rhythm Heaven, known as Rhythm Tengoku in Japan, will its debut in the U.S. during the first half of 2009. Mario & Luigi RPG 3, the latest entry in the company's playful RPG series for its plumber mascots, will also release sometime in North America this year.

Wii Sports Resort, along with its Wii MotionPlus peripheral designed to better capture user movements, is slated for the first half of 2009, as is the new Punch-Out!! game developed by Canadian studio Next Level Games. Treasure's on-rails shooter Sin and Punishment is planned for release later in 2009.

Interestingly, the company announced that two new sequels, Another Code R and Endless Ocean 2, were announced for both Japan and Europe, but not the U.S. Titles scheduled for Japan also include Spurn Smasher, Cosmic Walker, and Line Attack Heroes.

I think I vaguely remember it...although I can't remember if I played it. I think I may have played more of Coolboarders or something. Although I probably didn't play much of these types of games until SSX came out. But that franchise went downhill fast.
