Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant’s new Netflix comedy series “Santa Clarita Diet” just suddenly got a lot more interesting with Barrymore revealing to USA Today that the show isn’t a light breezy relationship comedy – rather it’s a darkly comedic but life-affirming horror drama.

No trailers or posters for the show had been released before now, only a few fairly basic stills which didn’t reveal anything. An earlier synopsis had the pair playing married realtors raising a teen daughter in the mountainous and placid Los Angeles suburb when Barrymore’s character undergoes a ‘dramatic change’.

Now it has been revealed that said dramatic change is actually death with Barrymore effectively playing a zombie with a growing craving for human flesh – something her husband and daughter must help satiate.

Despite the grim subject matter though, Barrymore says it’s very upbeat and unsentimental:

“There’s a real optimism to the show. I don’t want to watch a show about a couple fighting and falling apart, I can’t handle it right now. It’s not heavy, but it’s not lacking in a sort of sweetness, if you will. But it’s also got bite and backbone and balls.”

Barrymore also talks about her character’s arc:

“What if she finds herself, and we do this sort of Cro-Magnon type of evolution with her over the course of the ten episodes. No gimmicks, no prosthetics, just an awakening. I just really enjoyed just shedding a snakeskin with her.

“Castle” and “Firefly” star Nathan Fillion is also onboard playing a rival realtor. Victor Fresco (“Better Off Ted,” “Andy Richter Controls the Universe”) created the series which premieres in full on February 3rd.
