Are these movies Science Fiction Movies or not?

    Harry Potter
    TwiLight

Now! These movies rely on magic so I don't think of them as Science Fiction Movies
    but more like Fantasy.

Me and a Friend had a debate about this.
He even went so far as to say some of the incantations used scientific terms . ..
so that made them science fiction
I thought it was a weak argument

Not really a nerd question, more like a virgin question.

According to my wife, who has a masters in literature and a masters in library information science, they're fantasy. Unless you want to categorize them as alternate history, in which case they are science fiction.

There's an important difference between science fiction and fantasy. Is the unexplainable accomplished by magic or science?

    Moving objects without touching them:
    Science Fiction - tractor beam
    Fantasy - telekinesis

Person disappears and reappears in another place:
    Science Fiction - transporter
    Fantasy - apparition/transportation spell

Dead person brought back to life:
    Science Fiction - Frankenstein's monster
    Fantasy - necromancy

Large ball of fire projected toward enemy:
    Science Fiction - big gun
    Fantasy - fireball spell

    Person goes back in time:
    Science Fiction/Fantasy - bad writing

    Agree with IzakDavid13, it's a trick question.

Twilight is considered to be schitt.

Those movies are products designed to sell to a teenage demographic. Beyond that, they aren't anything.

Couldn't any work of fiction be categorized as alternate history?

Fantasy. However, fantasy nerds know that non-fantasy nerds use the terms interchangeably, and as a result, just kind of roll with it.
