can somebody please explain to a dummy (me) how all this works? why sometimes u can be over the limit, and sometimes you can't? If you can sign 2 max players, does the amount determine how much each team has before the cap?? thanks!

All you really need Also, BimaThug has taken the resident salary cap guru crown from aelliott (and others) so you could maybe read his posts more carefully than the lusual moronic suggestions that are so common around here. (edit. aelliot too, but he rarely posts anymore about these issues) But to answer shortly: Max salarys are determined by the years you have played but if your previous salary is bigger than the current max, you can get that (plus a few percent more). If a team holds the players "Bird Exception Rights", it can exceed the "Salary cap" to sign that player. (If the rights aren't renounced by the team). Yearly raises are standard but the team holding the Bird rights can offer a few percent more.
Appreciate the love, although I don't think there is any "crown" to be had. aelliott and NIKEstrad are also fountains of salary cap knowledge. I guess I am just behind aelliott's curve and haven't yet given up trying to explain things to the masses. The REAL salary cap guru is Larry Coon, to whose FAQs you have ever-so-appropriately linked. I'm fairly confident that if you read those FAQs start to finish a few times, you will have every bit of salary cap knowledge as me. It's no secret. I do give credit to aelliott and NIKEstrad for actually going straight to the source and quoting the ACTUAL collective bargaining agreement from time to time. I prefer the "NBA Salary Cap for Dummies" by Larry Coon. It's a much better read.
