    Florida Republican Senator Mel Martinez is resigning his seat. An announcement is expected today.
    UPDATE: Interesting dynamics at play. Governor Charlie Crist, who is running against conservative Marco Rubio for the seat when it's open next year, will appoint a replacement. Speculation is centered on former Republican Governor Bob Martinez, who would come to Washington when the Senate reconvenes in September and serve as a placeholder for the fourteen months until the November 2010 election.

    And I wonder what Crist does. Could he appoint himself? :D

    At least if they appoint Martinez, they may be able to save on some name expenditures.
