Magic waive Romero Osby

Drafted #51 by the Magic this past draft. They had to waive him because they couldn't come to terms on a buy-out with Hedo yet.

Osby is a 6'8, 240 PF. Just like Morey likes em.

Similar college production to Covington, but unlike Covington, Osby has been productive for this pre-season. One of the more productive rookies, in fact. Arguably better than #1 pick Anthony Bennett. Has 3-point range, would fit well in the Rockets system.

So... waive Covington, pick up Osby?

Maybe he got more minutes than Covington because the Magic suck.

Note: they cut Al Harrington in August to make room for guys exactly like Osby. This isn't about Hedo. Osby got beat out by a vet, Solomon Jones, so that must be pretty bad for a team in a youth movement.

Plus, he didn't play any PF in preseason. So, I don't see the point.

With the preseason officially over for the Orlando Magic, the team made their final roster cuts late Friday night. Romero Osby, Orlando’s 2013 second round pick out of the University of Oklahoma, was one of the surprises to not make the roster and was placed on waivers. Manny Harris, Kris Joseph and Mickell Gladness were also waived, to no surprise.

Romero Osby’s removal from the roster cleared space for veteran backup big man Solomon Jones to make the opening night roster. Jones outplayed Osby, as well as Gladness and Kyle O’Quinn, throughout the preseason to force the front office to make the tough decision to cut Osby.

Romero averaged 5.7 points and 4 rebounds per game in six preseason games and Solomon Jones averaged 4.6 points and 4.3 rebounds per game. While neither stat line jumps out at you, Jones’ ability to defend the center position gives the seven-year veteran a gigantic edge with limited roster spots available. Osby, while an extremely hard worker and athletic player, didn’t have an NBA position. While plenty of guys in the league fall into that category, it’s really hard to make it with the lack of an elite skill. Osby does a lot of things very good, but none great. His ultimate downfall – for now.

The team also has not reached a buyout with Hedo Turkoglu yet and the writing on the wall seems to be that the front office will keep him around as a trade piece until his salary becomes fully guaranteed in January. Jones’ salary will also be non-guaranteed until January.
