I need a few questionsabout electronic signatures answered if anybody can help.

How are electronic legal? Is there a procedure one must do to make them legal? Like I have a 4 digit for signing my FAFSA online, what makes it my legal signature?

Is there anything that can make it illegal?

Does a company just have to write out a statement saying what the electronic signature is and what its purpose is then have an employee/customer agree to the terms?

    How does it work?

Thanks for the link legend but that deals with healthcare issues which are highly confidential records. I need to know about electronic signatures for things like company timesheets. Your link was still helpful though, thanks. :)

I am actually writing my Ph.D. thesis about using standard terms online under U.S. Law (perhaps ProCD v. Zeidenberg will ring a bell for some of the lawyers here, as well as "UCITA").

I think for your purposes, something like this link here might be a sufficient first overview (only just googled it):
