So my hard drive on my Dell Inspiron 5150 starts making some grinding noises and goes out. I call tech support and they're sending me a new one which is all fine and dandy. But I would REALLY rather not lose all that por -- uh information that I have on this hard drive.

The tech support dude said something like this, "now there are some places you can go that will recover the information from your corrupted hard drive and put it on the new one, but Dell doesn't support that."

It sounds like I'd have to go in an alley to find one of "these places," but I'm so desperate I'm willing to try it. Anyone know of a place in town that will recover information from a corrupted hard drive? Any help would be appreciated.

    Oh, and I wish I hadn't gotten a Dell.

I wouldn't blame Dell, sounds like a HD failure, blame the makers of the HD. This can happen in any computer.

Data recovery services are not cheap. You will pay at least, $50 - $100, even if no data is recovered.

I would do a search for 'Data Recovery Services, Houston' on google and see what turns up....

here;s alittle trick that works in soime cases....take the drive out and seal it in something airtight...put it in your freezer for a few hours..and in the meantime prepare everything youwill need to make a backup....once you tak it out and let it get back to room temperature...hook it up and if it functions...immediately start your backup...

You might want to google something about freezing your harddrive and see if youcan find a more exact procedure with warnings...I dont remember how long to freeze and some of the more detailed warnings about exactly what to do in what order since its been a while since I heard about this.....but it is a valid procedure that has worked for some.

either that or pay for the recovery...
