Is Van Gundy the Mike Martz of the NBA?

    i.e., one of the worst clock managers in his league? How many times have the Rockets been without a timeout in the crucial moments of a close game? I've never seen it happen to a team so many times -- if the NBA kept a stat on this, I'm sure the Rockets would lead the league.

    To what would you attribute this? I'm not going to put all the blame on Van Gundy, but there has to be a reason why we always seem to be short on TO's.

    He uses his timeouts to get in situations where he can be close enough to be blamed for not having timeouts - i.e when you're down more than one possession with under a minute left.

    Though I love coaches who let players play the end of games instead of zillions of TOs.

    Worst clock manager? I'm not sure.

    But the two do have another similarity: they sell out to their strength.

    Martz is willing to optimize his offense at the expense of his defense, in terms of both talent and strategy.

    JVG does the same thing, but the reverse.

    I don't like it, because of the unbalanced effect. JVG would be a great defensive coordinator, if bball had such things ;).

    It's almost unbelievable how JVG uses to's, I forgot which game it was, but the Rox were out of timeouts w/ 3 minutes left. I'm not blaming him, but PLEASE SAVE ONE FREAK'N TIMOUT!!

    Ya, Steve's shot was bad, but 15 seconds left isn't enough time to run down the court and set up a play, period.

    Guys he HAS to use so many to keep this team from melting down.

    How many times has he called an extra timeout to settle the troops because they are in danger of being blown out?

    We just need more savvy players.
