my home PC's internet connectionis crapping out for some reason.

It's not the connection because I can't connect to any of the detected networks (about 2-3 usually work including my own)

In adition I can't even get a wired connection to work.

Usually it stalls on "connecting to network", occasionally I will repair and get to "assigning IP address", and sometimes it connects with the yellow "Limited or no connectivity" sign where it sends out like 1 or 2 packets a second. I got a few fleeting, slow connections last night but they quickly crashed.

I did a system restore to two days ago and that did nothing.

Um looks like your trying several things at once.. Go back to the basic..

If you are using a wirelss router don't. Go straight from the Cable Modem to your laptop. Turn your wireless card off and check your Ipconfig settings

If your unable to get any connection unplug the cable modem for a minute and plug it back in. This should recognize that it isn't connected to the Wireless router but to another device. Check ipconfig in your command prompt and if you have all the configurations there.. Ping yahoo.com

your time=**ms should be consistant not fluctuating more than 30MS both ways. If everythign is ok and you do not have any connection loss when doing a ping then your connection to the Internet should be fine.

It sounds like your not able to renew your IP. This could be a result of winsock corruption.

To reset the winsock catalog, go to the command prompt and enter:

    netsh winsock reset

    Then reboot.

If that doesn't resolve the issue, go to command prompt and type:

    ipconfig /renew

and then post the error message you receive.

Ah, your laptop is having the limited to no connectivity error....

Believe it or not sometimes just letting it sit there on for about half an hour will allow it to sort itself out.

You need to fix it quickly, we can't have your PPD average getting lower, that would never do.

aargh, more problems, ok I get connected for a few minutes now (like I am now) then it loses it. I ran the two dos functions, RoxFan73, and the error message I got was "No operation can be performed on wireless network connection while its media is disconnected"

Like I said don't use wireless try to first figure out if your cable modem is having the problem.

It's not the modem, because I've had the same issue with both my connection and my neighbor's connectin and a wired connection, it's def. localised to my pc

So I am assuming that you were able to connect after renewing your IP, and then lost the connection after 5 minutes. Sounds like your wireless card/router is responsible for the loss of connectivity.

Are you using a PC Card, or is your wireless card integrated? If it's a PC Card, you can try another slot, or swap out with a known good one. For integrated wireless NIC's, you can try firmware, bios and driver upgrades.

Also, what T-911 suggested would be useful as well. That way you can test your ethernet card's ability to maintain a connection.

Edit: Also boot into safe mode with networking an see what happens.

OK I finally got around to fixing this (have been using a wired connection for the last month or so) and so I just said screw it and bought a new router - but it still wn't work (logged onto somebody else's wireless now).

The problem I get is that I always stall on the DNS part (it shows as connected but I can't get any packets/data etc, though I don't get the "limited or no connectivity" error. I can get an IP address and do some of those ping tests on command prompt and they all check out - it just won't assign me a DNS or I always fail that part of the test. (it fails on my xbox360 at that stage too)

HOw do I fix a busted DNS issue?
