Ok, so I have a Mitsu Galant 98.
    Its manual transmission

I was driving it normally, no problems and all of a sudden the gears became really hard to switch. And the clutch was grinding against something when it was pressed in gear. Now, I cant even switch gears at all, but i can drive in the one gear i start my car in. The gears switch around normally when the car is off. But once its started, no such luck.

Also, the clutch pedal goes in and out easily, both when the car is on and off.

But when the car is on, and I try to engage into any gear, 1st, 2nd... or reverse, it wont budge.

Any Ideas what can the problem be?

One mechanic I took it to said it was the clutch kit that needed to be replaced and would cost about 450 to do so.

I just had my master and slave on the clutch replaced (dunno if this is the same as the clutch kit?)

And what would the cost of fixing this problem be?

I looked at the prices for a clutch kit and its about 120 dollars, so the rest for labor seems a little much

    any help is appreciated.

yup.. sounds like a clutch problem. labor always cost only on clutches cuz it's a b@#ch to remove. if you're thinking about doing it yourself...don't. as for the master and slave clutch thing.. i donno. your car has clutches everywhere include your brakes, a/c and other things.

a good clutch costs at least $300, labor on avg is $250. dont drive your vehicle with a bad clutch...otherwise you could toast your syncro's and thats going to cost u major $$$$ to repair. have your mechanic check out your flywheel when they replace the clutch and make sure you use a new throw out bearing and pilot bearing.

if there was a problem with your master/slave cylinder...your clutch pedal would have very little or no pressure.

Could it be something as simple as a lack of clutch fluid? It might be worth checking.
